Subject: How Divers Can Help Florida's Oceans

Florida’s Oceans can use the help of divers from across the state, and here’s your opportunity!
My company has been contracted by an environmental organization to bring on a new license plate, and we need to get the owners of 15,000 Florida automobiles to agree to support the plate within the next month. There’s absolutely no obligation, and the plate won’t even be available until next July – assuming we collect the 15,000 names.
And
here’s where you come in:
* First, please go to our website at www.floridasoceansplate.org
and fill in the five required fields so you can count toward our 15,000
total (each vehicle counts, so if you have more than one you can list them
all)
* Next, pass this e-mail along to all of
the divers on your e-mail list with an introduction from yourself explaining
the reason for the e-mail, publish it in your newsletters and get the word
out – be creative. For this campaign to work, we are counting on
the people that will ultimately benefit from this plate to pass the link
on to people they know, etc.
* Finally, e-mail us at info@floridasoceansplate.org
with any questions or ideas on where we can collect additional signatures;
i.e. large gatherings, places with lots of cars, whatever.
The organization we’re doing this for is the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, and the proceeds from the plate will provide funding to support conservation, scientific research and education projects that help us to understand and protect Florida’s precious ocean and coastal resources.
It will only take a minute of your time.

Have
you noticed the presence of a "red algae" covering many of the corals,
especially on the second reef? Many divers have reported seeing long,
dark-red, filamentous algae covering many reef areas in Broward County.
The algae, called Cyanobacteria, often cover living organisms, such as
sea fans and soft corals. The cause of this algae bloom in unknown at this
time. Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental Protection
is soliciting the help of local divers. They are concerned about
harmful affects and are trying to get a handle on how widespread it is.
They think it is increasing but would like to have more data to determine
this definitively. They designed a questionnaire to determine the extent
of the algae infestation on the reef.
If you are interested, download and print this questionnaire (a 1-page PDF file) and return it to Ken Banks. DPEP hopes to get enough data to be able to map the distribution patterns - where it is and where it isn't. They will be looking at environmental parameters, including flow patterns, temperature, light intensity, water chemistry and others, to try to understand the cause.
Luxfer Gas Cylinders has announced a new scuba tank trade-in program to enable owners of older Luxfer scuba tanks manufactured in the U.S. from 6351 aluminum alloy to trade in their tanks and receive $50 credit toward the purchase of new scuba tanks made from Luxfer’s 6061 alloy. Luxfer will implement the simple four-step program outlined below on January 1, 2003. The program will end on December 31, 2003. This is a limited one-year offer!
1. To determine whether your Luxfer scuba tank is made from 6351 aluminum alloy, check the original hydrostatic test date (the earliest date) stamped on the crown. (Look for a month/year combination, such as 3/75.) If the stamped year is 1972 through 1987, the tank is made from 6351 alloy. A limited number of Luxfer scuba tanks were also made from 6351 alloy during the first half of 1988. If you have a 1988 tank with an original hydrostatic test date of 6/88 or earlier, Luxfer will assume that it is a 6351-alloy tank and issue an RG number. Tanks with an original hydrostatic test date of 7/88 or later are made from 6061 alloy and are not eligible for the trade-in program.
2. Call the Luxfer Customer Service Department toll-free (1-800-764-0366) and report the number of 6351-alloy tanks to be exchanged. A Luxfer customer service representative will ask you for the model number, serial number and original hydrostatic test date for each tank, as well as your return mailing information. The representative will then issue you a returned goods (RG) authorization number and tell you how to ship tanks to Luxfer in order to receive a special $50 credit voucher for each tank.
3. Send your 6351-alloy scuba tanks directly to Luxfer’s plants in Graham, North Carolina, or Riverside, California (whichever is closest).
4. Luxfer will mail you a $50 voucher for each tank. You may redeem these vouchers toward the purchase of new Luxfer 6061-alloy scuba tanks at any participating dive shop or retail store.
Remember, this limited program will only be available during 2003—so don’t delay!
