GOOD FOOD, GOOD FRIENDS, AND A GREAT NIGHT OUT...

Labor Day Weekend starts our month with some well deserved time off.  Brian Hufford and Barbara Sabatelli have put together some diving fun for that long weekend!  First, on Saturday, join them for a night dive in Pompano on the Sea Emperor.  Then, Brian's going home for a few hours, and at 8:30am, you're invited to join him on Hollywood Beach for some shore diving. Don't miss an opportunity for some extra down time.

Then...

Come one, come all, to the South Florida Divers Annual Seafood Festival, Saturday, September 10th, starting at 6:00pm.  Cost is $5 for you and one guest.  Any additional guests are $10 each.  Please bring your catch of the day, along with your favorite covered dish to Lauderdale Isles Yacht Club.  At the request of LIYC, please leave your pets at home, they will not be permitted on the property.

That's only the start of the month.

Let's all do the cucaracha down to this month's dinner spot at Tequila Sunrise.  Catch Chris Hinckley for details.

For all who didn't make the August Keys trip, there's another opportunity on Saturday the 17th.  Dave Schneider and Pete Stephinson are coordinating a Spiegel Grove dive out of Capt. Slates in Key Largo.

Join Fred Miller, Bill Dietz and Dave Schneider our "Over The Hill, Off The Stern Divers", along the Fort Lauderdale coast for some weekday underwater exploration.

Our last weekend ends with a private boat dive with Dave Wills aboard his boat "Recycled".  Dave leaves out of John Lloyd State Park for some early morning lobstering fun.

Until we meet again, dive often, dive safe, and always go down with a buddy.

SEPTEMBER MEETING

FLORIDA SEA GRANT:

AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF OUR CORAL REEFS

Committed to enhancing the practical use and conservation of coastal and marine resources, the Broward County Sea Grant Extension Program provides research-based information to the community in the areas of environmental and water quality, sustainable recreation practices and marine fisheries, boating and waterway management, and coastal habitats.  Sea Grant works with the marine community to help balance the development, recreational and economic needs of a growing population while protecting our natural resources and marine environment.

As a follow-up to Chantal Collier?s May presentation, in which we learned about the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI), Florida Sea Grant Agent Dianne Behringer will first give a brief overview of SEFCRI, and then devote specific attention to its Awareness and Appreciation Focus Team.  Since lack of awareness and appreciation is a threat to our reefs, a Local Action Strategy was developed to set priority goals to address these issues.  Dianne will discuss the projects underway, including a Needs Assessment Study, Media Kit, Hotel Tent Card, Website/Traveling Exhibit and Scuba Diving Industry Workshop, as well as the upcoming projects.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:  DIANNE BEHRINGER

After receiving a B.S. degree from Virginia Tech in secondary education, Dianne Behringer taught high school biology for four years.  She then received a M.S. degree in marine ecology from Old Dominion University, and subsequently worked for Florida Sea Grant in the Florida Keys before moving to Broward County to join the Waters Resources Division of the Department of Planning and Environmental Protection.  Currently, she works for Florida Sea Grant and University of Florida/Broward County Extension Education as a Marine Extension Agent, delivering educational programs about marine issues relevant to Broward County, including SEFCRI, in which she serves as the Local Navigator for the Awareness and Appreciation Team.

A SAFETY MINUTE

A  Monthly Feature by Brian Hufford

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

  September 2005 Safety Minute Tip:

Do you have your regulator and gauges checked annually?  We need to know that our breathing gear, pressure and depth gauges are in top shape and working order.  Most of us don’t have the know-how or technical skills to do this ourselves, so once a year, take your regulator and gauges in for a check-up.  I take mine in during the winter months, when my diving schedule isn’t so busy.

Additional Overseas Trip added for 2006 : San Salvador, Bahamas,

June 17th-24th, 2006

The SFDI group that just returned from the Turks & Caicos Islands had such a great time that a number of them decided to do a similar trip in 2006.  Check out the photos in this month's Newsletter and on the site to see what great diving they enjoyed, and the fun times which they had on land. On returning, Pete Stephinson, trip organizer checked out the prices and availability and secured an even better deal for 2006 at the Club Med Columbus Isle on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Scuba Diving "What San Sal offers divers is vertical walls, populated shallow reefs ideal for macro photography, groupers so friendly they will lay in your arms and the ever-present chance of spotting big creatures, such as Hammerhead Sharks and Manta Rays. San Sal was one of the very first destinations to develop wall diving and this is still the reason most divers visit. The south and western sides of the island are lined by one of the most impressive walls in The Bahamas, starting as shallow as 40 feet and dropping to thousands of feet. "

For more info visit http://www.about-the-bahamas.com/bahamas/sansalvador.cfm

The Club Med Columbus Isle offers similar facilities, dining, and range of activities to those we experienced at Turkoise. You can read about the resort on their web site at http://www.clubmed.com

The cost for the trip  includes:

       - Round trip airfare on Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale (includes taxes and transfers)
       - 7 day all inclusive package at Club Med Columbus Isle
             - all meals, drinks and gratuities
             - watersports and evening entertainment
             - 6 day diving package (reduced rates for non-divers) or those wanting a 3 day package)

Ft. Lauderdale Public Library Bluewater Symposium

The Ft. Lauderdale Public Library's Center for the Book and AUE will be
holding a Bluewater Adventure Series symposium on December 3, 2005, at
the Ft. Lauderdale Public Library (Main Branch). The symposium will
focus on a theme of underwater exploration, in conjunction with an
exclusive exhibit on Jules Verne and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
The Ft. Lauderdale Public Library will be the only U.S. library hosting
this unique French exhibit, which celebrates the centennial of the
noted author.
While a full lineup of speakers has not been finalized, I can let you
know that Richie Kohler and John Chatterton will both be present
as 'headliners' and giving an entertaining presentation on "Shadow
Divers."
This symposium will occur amidst the innagural Florida Dive Show in
West Palm Beach, December 2-4, but should complement the dive-related
activities in South Florida that weekend. The Bluewater Adventure
Series symposium is free and open to the public.
Aside from the speakers and Jules Verne exhibit, there will be other
displays (e.g., ROVs and other underwater exploration tools) at the
library.
Please mark this event on your calendar, and we look forward to seeing
everyone there!
I will update the list as new speakers are confirmed.
Cheers,
Mike
