PRESIDENT's MESSAGE

by Cheryl Teugels

DON'T FORGET OUR TANK RAFFLE!!!!!

Consensus says.. a good time was had by all at this year's Annual Seafood Festival.  If you don't believe me, take a look at the photo shot of us by our webmaster and all night photographer, Captain Chris.  Thanks Chris, for the commemorative photo opportunity!

You know, it takes a special group of people to successfully put together, the main events which are planned for our club each year.  At our October  General Meeting, please stop by the Membership Table and show your thanks and appreciation to Joe Smariga, who spends countless hours behind hot charcoal, making sure you have dinner cooked to your satisfaction, so you can enjoy an evening of socializing.  Then locate that tall audio/video guy by the name of John Kansman, who without his coordinating efforts along with Dave Wills, might have forgotten to bring the 30 pounds of chicken, and all the coolers of drinks we consumed the evening of the Seafood Fest.  So, please take a moment and show your gratitude for their concerned efforts as well.  My thanks also goes out to all the volunteers who assisted in the set up and tear down that night.  Kudos to all!!

This month we'd like to welcome Marjorie Meechan as our Club's Publishing Editor.  We look forward to her articles highlighting the activities and events scheduled on our monthly calendar.  Please share your stories and tall tales of good times with her, so she can publish it monthly for all of us to enjoy.  Welcome aboard Marjorie!!

Lot's of diving events scheduled on this month's calendar.  There are two American Dream Charters taking off to the Tenneco Towers and the Atria early in the month.  Bob Horin is offering a $79 Nitrox Certification Class to start on Tuesday the 11th, followed by boats dives on Sunday the 16th.  Dave Wills is coordinating a private boat dive, looking for other vessels to join him in taking a group of us out on Saturday, the 15th.  And speaking of Boat Owners, Dave Wills would like all Club Members who Own A Boat and would like to participate in our Private Boat Dives, to join him for a meeting at Mi Casa Su Casa, on Tuesday evening the 11th.  There, you will be informed of what it takes to put together and coordinate one of these outings, as safety is always our first priority.

Then, let's celebrate the world known German tradition of Octoberfest.  This month's restaurant of choice is the Old Heidelberg, Fort Lauderdale's premier German Restaurant.  There'll be ohmpa music, glasses of great german beers, a kitchen full of homemade sausages and old world traditional German entrees such as Weinerschnitzel and Bratwurst.  The delight doesn't stop there, there's also the grand finale of black forest cake and song and dance as the night goes on.  Bring your appetite and thirst and maybe your accordion, and join us for an evening of celebration.

Later in the month, Pete Stephinson is hosting two events, one of which is a Lantana dive on Sunday the 23rd in the afternoon, and the other is a Golf outing in Boca, on Saturday the 29th.  Please see Pete for more details.  Check out the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show starting on the 27th of this month, and ending on the 30th.  THE 30TH!!!  That's the night we put our clocks back one hour, which delays the little ghosts and goblins who come screeching at our doors the following night on Halloween.  DON'T FORGET, Spring ahead and, FALL BEHIND

As always, enjoy a fun-filled month of events and good diving, and PLEASE, PLEASE... let your gratitude be shown to all the fine people responsible for the coordinating and executing of your trips and events.  Without their efforts and dedication, we wouldn't outshine all the other dive clubs as we've been known to do for over 31 years now.

Dive Safe, Dive Often, and Abide by the No Deco Dive Rule.

OCTOBER MEETING

"FORGET THE TITANIC - THIS SUB WRECK IS HOT!"

That's how The Wall Street Journal raved about the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley and its amazing story. For more than a century the fate of the Hunley remained one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Civil War. The brainchild of wealthy New Orleans planter and lawyer Horace Lawson Hunley, the submarine inspired tremendous hopes of breaking the Union's naval blockade of Charleston, South Carolina, only to drown two crews on disastrous test runs. But on the night of February 17, 1864, the Hunley finally made good on its promise. Under the command of Lieutenant George Dixon, the sub rammed a torpedo into the Union sloop Housatonic and sank the ship within minutes, accomplishing a feat of stealth technology that would not be repeated for half a century.  However, shortly after its stunning success, the Hunley vanished without a trace somewhere off the South Carolina coast.  WHAT HAPPENED???????

Fast forward to August 8, 2000.  With thousands of spectators crowding Charleston Harbor, the Hunley was raised from the bottom of the sea and towed ashore, and father and son re-enacting team John and Robert Feeney were there!

So, on October 5th, appearing in their Civil War uniforms, the Feeneys will edu-tain us with Hunley history and lore.  They will speak of early submarines, the Civil War navy, inventor Horace Hunley, the Hunley's construction and trial runs, the Union's blockade and defenses against sub attacks, and, finally, the Hunley's recovery, excavation and future.

Come and hear about this amazing piece of Americana - the spellbinding tale of the famous Confederate submarine Hunley, and the secrets that sank with her in 1864.

ABOUT JOHN AND ROBERT FEENEY

John and Robert Feeney of Plantation, FL are father and son reenactors.  Robert is a student at Broward Community College majoring in history.  He is currently president of BCC's Anthropology Club.  He is a certified scuba diver.  John is an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, and a graduate of FAU.  John and Robert are members of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, the Southern Telegraph Company, the Paladin Society, Gold Coast Reenactors, and the Broward County Marine Historical Society.  They have participated in many national events, and were present in Charleston when the Hunley was raised from the ocean floor.  Robert participated in the ceremony to celebrate the recovery, as part of a Civil War artillery salute consisting of three original cannons. They also have visited the Warren Lasch Research Center, where the Hunley rests today.

A SAFETY MINUTE

A  Monthly Feature by Brian Hufford

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

  October 2005 Safety Minute Tip:

Most of us have our own tanks and we hopefully get to use them often.  Tanks need to be visually inspected annually and pressure (hydro) tested every five years.  Every day we go diving, we need to move tanks with safety in mind.  Pressurized tanks, if ruptured, can become deadly; all that compressed air can propel a ruptured tank like a missile.  It’s a good practice to keep tanks secure when moving them in your vehicle.  A tank cradle will keep the tanks from banging into each other.  It’s also best not to leave your tanks in your vehicle when you’re not diving . . . less chance to bang around and also not overheat and degrade the gaskets.

San Salvador, Bahamas

June 17th-24th, 2006

The SFDI group that just returned from the Turks & Caicos Islands had such a great time that a number of them decided to do a similar trip in 2006.  Check out the photos in this month's Newsletter and on the site to see what great diving they enjoyed, and the fun times which they had on land. On returning, Pete Stephinson, trip organizer checked out the prices and availability and secured an even better deal for 2006 at the Club Med Columbus Isle on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Scuba Diving "What San Sal offers divers is vertical walls, populated shallow reefs ideal for macro photography, groupers so friendly they will lay in your arms and the ever-present chance of spotting big creatures, such as Hammerhead Sharks and Manta Rays. San Sal was one of the very first destinations to develop wall diving and this is still the reason most divers visit. The south and western sides of the island are lined by one of the most impressive walls in The Bahamas, starting as shallow as 40 feet and dropping to thousands of feet. "

For more info visit http://www.about-the-bahamas.com/bahamas/sansalvador.cfm

The Club Med Columbus Isle offers similar facilities, dining, and range of activities to those we experienced at Turkoise. You can read about the resort on their web site at http://www.clubmed.com

The cost for the trip  includes:

       - Round trip airfare on Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale (includes taxes and transfers)
       - 7 day all inclusive package at Club Med Columbus Isle
             - all meals, drinks and gratuities
             - watersports and evening entertainment
             - 6 day diving package (reduced rates for non-divers) or those wanting a 3 day package)

We have over 20 people signed up. Don't miss out, if you want to sign up you are recommended to do so at the September Meeting. A $200 deposit is required to confirm your place. Payments will be accepted monthly with full payment due by April 2006.

Ft. Lauderdale Public Library Bluewater Symposium

The Ft. Lauderdale Public Library's Center for the Book and AUE will be
holding a Bluewater Adventure Series symposium on December 3, 2005, at
the Ft. Lauderdale Public Library (Main Branch). The symposium will
focus on a theme of underwater exploration, in conjunction with an
exclusive exhibit on Jules Verne and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
The Ft. Lauderdale Public Library will be the only U.S. library hosting
this unique French exhibit, which celebrates the centennial of the
noted author.
While a full lineup of speakers has not been finalized, I can let you
know that Richie Kohler and John Chatterton will both be present
as 'headliners' and giving an entertaining presentation on "Shadow
Divers."
This symposium will occur amidst the innagural Florida Dive Show in
West Palm Beach, December 2-4, but should complement the dive-related
activities in South Florida that weekend. The Bluewater Adventure
Series symposium is free and open to the public.
Aside from the speakers and Jules Verne exhibit, there will be other
displays (e.g., ROVs and other underwater exploration tools) at the
library.
Please mark this event on your calendar, and we look forward to seeing
everyone there!
I will update the list as new speakers are confirmed.
Cheers,
Mike
