President's Message

How lucky we are......

~ By Pete Stephinson

If you missed the annual Pig Roast you missed a great party. We had a good turnout and a great time was had by all. Thanks to Joe, John, Pat and all the other folks who pitched in to make this a great evening.

On a recent visit to London, I stopped in at Harrods to have a look round. Those of you who have been to Harrods will know that as well as being a magnificent department store, it also has a supurb food court with delicacies from all over the world. I was interested to spot a display of  "Rock Lobster Tails" from the Bahamas, price 77.95 UK Pounds per Kilogram. That's $58/lb for us. They were the exact same lobsters as we catch here off the South Florida coast. The photo below shows the Harrods display. When you consider the amount of these lobsters we catch - or serve up at our annual sea food festival, it makes you appreciate how lucky we are to live here in South Florida, where there is an abundant amount of good weather, good diving, plenty of fish, and lobsters for the taking.

At last summer diving is upon us. Last Sunday (April 17th) I dove Pennekamp. We dove the Benwood and French Reef. The conditions were great. The sea was calm and the viz good. The water was a balmy 80 degrees. They were two great dives. With the arrival of summer, now is a good time to get your gear out and get it checked in preparation for summer diving. We have a full schedule of dives and other activities planned for the summer so let's get wet!!!

I am looking forward to visiting St Lucia in June accompanied by 12 other SFDI members. We will be diving for a week based in Marigot Bay. I 'm looking forward to some great dives and a great time exploring the island.

See you in the water some time soon

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Mayand beyond !

David Schneider, Vice President for Calendar

Once again we would like to thank all those members who have stepped up and organized our many various events. No matter how much we have going on we still need more members to come forward with new ideas and to act as Coordinators. Any E-Board member will be more than happy to give you any needed assistance to get you started. The more people we have planning events the better our Club will be.

To ensure privacy please note that we never post the phone numbers of our event coordinators. If you are a Club member please consult your Buddy List for the number you need. If you do not have one there will be a copy available at the next General Meeting, or contact Melissa Ames.

The Calendar is here for your convenience. If you see an event that interests you please contact the Coordinator directly. You can sign-up for an event at any time. Simply contact the Coordinator and he/she will be more than happy to add your name to the list and tell you where to mail payment. Remember, you are not on an event until payment has been received. For those events with a maximum number of openings the date payment was received will be the determining factor for who goes on the event. No exceptions, no whining.

"POLICIES AND PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE.

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website. I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them. I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:  A member is confirmed on an event only after their payment has been received.  Payments for dives must be made when signing-up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule provided by the Coordinator. In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive or other event he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation deadline. Cancellation deadlines are outlined in Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum qualifications, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums will be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive. No exceptions will be allowed.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive, trip or other event. These can be cases where someone needs extra help off or back on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic. It is the responsibility of the member to make sure that the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

If any of the above are not abundantly clear be sure to get clarification from an E-Board member.

Joe G’s Safety minute for May 2011

Is Flying After Diving Safe

You’ve been enjoying your vacation and diving in some beautiful areas – but as the end of your vacation approaches you scramble to fit in a last couple of dives before flying home. Is it safe to dive the day of a flight? How long of a gap do you need to leave, before taking to the skies after a dive?

Tests were done as far back as 1960 that showed rates of decompression sickness were high in those who had been diving between 4 and 12hrs before taking a flight at an altitude of 8 – 10,000ft.

In the very first test, performed by the Navy, two airline pilots had been diving at a depth of <30 ft, then piloted a plane 4hrs later at an altitude of 8-10,000ft. Both of the pilots became incapacitated – the flight engineer, who had also been diving 12hrs prior, while not affected as severely, were able to land the plane. This test was conducted to discover the efficacy of decompression after diving and before exposure to altitude. Unfortunately the test never caught on.

Divers Alert Network have also recorded instances where divers have suffered decompression sickness when flying soon after a dive and the speed and severity of the symptoms was in direct correlation to the depth and duration of the dive and the time lapse between diving and flying. Some were affected with a 7 – 12 hr interval and others anything up to 3 days.

In theory it is suggested that a 12hr lapse of time between a dive and a flight, providing it is a single dive, should be safe. However no studies have been done on subjects who dive 2 or 3 times a day for a number of days while on a trip and then fly. It is known that repeated dives in a few days window can cause a build up of nitrogen in the blood and this can lead to problems at altitude. It is also known that the more extreme dives to deeper depths, can also prove problematic, if the subject is then subjected to altitude - however the figures for these kinds of scenarios have not been examined. It is recommended that an interval before flying should range between 2 and 12 hours for no decompression diving. It is a reasonable recommendation that divers, who have had less than a total of two hours no decompression dive time during the 24 hours before flying, should wait 12 hours before flying. Divers who do multi-day diving should wait 18 to 24 hours before flying, but preferably longer.

Anyone who has been diving, regardless of whether they have been through decompression, may still have small bubbles, which while not enough to cause a problem on the surface, may expand at altitude, causing decompression sickness. Keeping dives conservative will reduce the risk of bubbles.

To improve your risks even further it is recommended that any diving be avoided in the last 48hrs before flying.
