                                                                                       Presidents Letter

                                                                                       It's getting warmer........

~ By Pete Stephinson

I don't know about you, but I've been frustrated every time I've tried to go diving over the last month or so. It seems that we've either had winds, waves or colder than normal weather. Over the last few days it has started to get warmer so I'm looking forward to being able to get in some more dives over the months ahead.  the calendar is starting to fill up with a number of dives. We have private boat dives, Charter boat dives and a dive under the Blue Heron Bridge which I've been told is one not to be missed. Also, a number of us are looking forward to the first of our overseas trips, those to Fiji and Saba are  in June. These will be followed by Belize in July and the Bahamas later on in the year.

If you haven't been in the water over the winter months, now is a good time to get your gear serviced and checked out. There's nothing more frustrating than going out on a dive and having a gear problem.

If you have enjoyed attending club dives now is the time to start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive  why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES...

Club Policies on Dives and Trips:

Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone.  If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones:

1.      Payment for Dives, Events and trips:  A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid.  Payments for dives should be made when signing up.  Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator.  In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment.

2.      Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time.  Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event.

3.      Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels.  For example Advanced Open Water.  In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator.  In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive.  In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar.  No exceptions will be made for any reason.

4.      Special Needs:  Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water.  However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance.  It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

April Meeting Program

BYE BYE, BUBBLES

It has been several years since diving legend Tom Mount addressed SFDI, and, on May 6th, he will inform us about one of the fastest growing parts of the dive industry - rebreathers.

A typical scuba breathing apparatus is an open-circuit system, wasting most of our exhaled breath as we expel it into the surrounding water.  Generally, the breathing gas in rebreathers is continuously recycled in a closed loop.  The exhaled air passes into a breathing bag called a counterlung, through a filter that absorbs carbon dioxide, and mixes with oxygen before we breathe it again.  Tom will describe the advantages and disadvantages of rebreathers, their range of sophistication and the best candidates for their use.  He will also bring a few for us to view.

After you read Tom’s bio below, we’re sure that you’ll not want to miss this opportunity to meet and learn from such a giant in our sport.  See you on May 6th!

ABOUT TOM MOUNT

Tom Mount is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of IAND, Inc./IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers). He brings over 40 years of active diving leadership to IANTD. Tom's career includes military diving, commercial diving, research diving, saturation diving, supervision of saturation diving projects and a wide variety of recreational diving leadership positions. Tom owned a dive shop and commercial diving service company where he specialized in installing underwater communication cables for the Cape Kennedy missile range and salvage work from 1963 to 1968. During this period he formed the Aqua Marine Cave Dwellers (later renamed the Florida Cave Dwellers) from which he and Dave Desautels, Larry Briel, and Dale Malloy formed the first cave (technical) diving certification program in the USA, The National Association of Cave Divers (NACD). From 1968 to 1976 Tom was the Diving Officer at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS). While in this capacity he developed programs that had scientists routinely performing air dives to 240 fsw (72 msw) and Heliox to 300 fsw (90 msw). In addition, RSMAS was the most active university program involved in saturation dives. Tom participated in Tek Tite II, Hydrolab (supervision and performance of numerous saturation dives) and supervised the diving on the NOAA sponsored FLARE saturation diving project. From 1969 to 1976 Tom supervised the chambers at RSMAS which treated the vast majority of diving accidents in South Florida and the Bahamas.

Tom left RSMAS to become the Training Director for the National YMCA Underwater Activities Program. While there he was the Director of the Army Corps of Engineers Diver Training Program and the lead author of its training manual. Tom then spent a short period of his career as the Vice President of Marketing for Teach Tour Dive Travel Company and Resorts. Following this Tom continued his career as a diving consultant, instructor, free lance photographer, journalist, author, and marketing consultant. Tom became the Vice President of IAND, Inc. in 1991 and developed Standards and Procedures for technical diving. In 1992 he accepted Dick Rutkowski's proposal to become the President of IANTD and then in 1996 to become the CEO of IAND, Inc./IANTD.  In 2006 Tom was voted to his current position of Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Since that time Tom has been active in IAND, Inc./IANTD and Tom Mount’s Quality Diver Education.  Tom has logged in excess of 11,000 dives including cave dives, wreck dives and dives deeper than 200 fsw (60 msw). Tom has been instrumental in developing rebreather training programs and in particular CCR programs. He is one of, if not the most experienced CCR divers in the world. Tom was the first to be a certified CCR Instructor. His deepest dive on CCR is to 537 fsw (160 msw). Tom is truly one of the most, if not the most, all around experienced technical divers in the world today.

Tom is the author of The Cave Diving Manual, Safe Cave Diving, The Greatest Adventure Photography, Practical Diving, The New Practical Diving, Mixed Gas Diving, The Army Corps of Engineering Course Syllabus, The Advanced Deep Air Diver Student Workbook, The Technical EANx Student Workbook, The Trimix Student Workbook and The Cave Diving Student Manual and Workbook, The Technical Diver Encyclopedia, A contibutor to various CCR manuals and workbooks, a contributor to the NOAA Dive Manual, author of hundreds of articles in various magazines worldwide. His photographs have received publication and acclaim internationally.

Tom has worked with the Cousteaus, Bruno Valetti and John Stoneman and several other production companies on various TV specials and has been involved in commercial and advertising photography. Tom is also a Master in Martial Arts, a licensed Coast Guard Captain and an airplane pilot. Tom is an IANTD Instructor Trainer at all levels, NACD Instructor, NAUI Instructor Trainer, PADI Instructor number 498, and is listed in the books Who's Who In Diving, and Pioneers In Diving. Tom has received dozens of awards for his contributions to diving. He is the recipient of diving's most prestigious award, the NOGI, for his contributions to Sports Education.

In addition Tom has studied martial arts for over 50 years . He first started boxing at age 9 in 1948 then was introduced to Judo in 1952. While in the US Navy in 1958 he first discovered Karate. In 1971 Tom began to switch over to Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido studying under then Master (now Grand Master) Park. Tom has taught at Park's Black Belt Academy, The Armed Service YMCA in Key West, various community centers and at his own "by invitation only school" Mount's World of Martial Arts. He still teaches an average of three times a week. Tom teaches a complete Martial Arts program encompassing mind, body and spirit. He emphasizes Ki, and also practices Qi Gong, meditation, visualization and intuitive sciences and introduces his martial arts students to these disciplines with many becoming very proficient in practicing these for health and insight into life and enlightenment. Tom is a Grand Master in Tae Kwon Do (8th Dan), and Kick Boxing (8th Dan), He is a Master (6th Dan) in Hapikdo and a 4th Dan in Judo. He also has Dan ratings in Karate. Tom developed an effective self defense course titled "Street Self Defense International" for those who need an effective means to protect themselves but who do not have the desire or time to pursue an overall martial arts program, Tom became an international referee for the AAU in 1987 and today is a member of the prestigious United States Martial Arts Association (USMA) as well as other single discipline Martial Arts Associations.

A SAFETY MINUTE

This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

Plan your dive and dive your plan

You will hear this in your training (or you should) and you should follow this advice. Prior to going under, you and your buddy should know the max depth you will go, the amount of bottom time you'll have and how much air you will start to ascend with. Check your air supply often. You should also agree on the hand signals you will use to communicate underwater.

South Florida Divers Club

  Frequently Asked Questions

By Brian Hufford

What kind of club is South Florida Divers?  We are a dive and social club.  We have diving and social events almost every week.  There’s more diving in the warmer months, but we have trips every month of the year.

What about social events?  We enjoy get togethers such as beach picnics, dinner on the town, bike rides, Holiday boat cruises, things like that.  We also have three parties each year: a pig roast in the spring, a seafood party in September and a holiday party in early December.  We usually have 80+ people in attendance; they’re always a great time.

Where do you dive?  Most of our diving is in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach area, where we do boats and shore diving.  We get down to the Keys several times each year, and we also do two or three out of country trips.  This past year we had trips to Turks and Caicos, Bimini, and Papua New Guinea.

What about club meetings?  We have a monthly meeting, the first Wednesday of the month, at the Lauderdale Isles Yacht Club, 2637 Whale Harbor Lane, Ft. Lauderdale.  The meeting starts with a 30 minute social from 7:00 to 7:30 then the business section from 7:30 til 8:00, a short break, then the program or speaker.  We’ve had some very interesting speakers this past year, covering everything from the CSS Hunly to updates on important ocean environment issues.

How does the club organize all these events?  South Florida Divers is a volunteer organization, so it’s a club member that does each event.  Each event, social or diving, has a trip leader and a sign-up sheet.  We go over the calendar at each club meeting, plus, it’s in another section of this website. The sign-up sheet has the details about the trip, location, time, cost {if any}, trip leader.  We have a table set up with the sign-up sheets and a table for the treasury if funds are required.

What about membership?  Membership dues cover each calendar year and are $55 for individual and $65 for family.  There is a one time set-up fee of $5.  We ask that you be a member before participating in club events [other than the club meetings].

What do I need to do to join?  We have three requirements: You are a certified diver, you have and maintain diver insurance, and you pay your dues.   You can join at any club meeting, the membership table is just inside the door, or you can mail in the application.

What’s the best way to get involved in the club?  Become a member and join in the fun and events.  Members are always welcome to help with club work, lead a trip, organize a beach picnic, or participate on the board.
