MEETING PROGRAM
SOUTHEAST
FLORIDA’S CORAL REEFS
HOW
ARE THEY (WE!) DOING?
Coral
reefs are some of the oldest ecosystems on earth. Built by a variety of coral
and other species that secrete skeletons of calcium carbonate accumulating
over time, coral reefs can grow to be massive structures extending over wide
areas of shallow tropical and subtropical seas. Coral reefs protect our coasts
by reducing wave energy from storms and hurricanes. As a source of food and
shelter, they provide critical habitats for numerous species. They support
fisheries and provide sources for
health and beauty aids, including ingredients for new medicines.
Chantal
Collier,
Coral Reef Program Manager for the Florida Department of Environmental
Protection, will speak to us on May 4th.
She is facilitating the development, coordination and implementation of
the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative through Florida’s membership on
the United States Coral Reef Task Force.
Chantal will discuss the issues and threats to these coral habitats,
describe projects designed to minimize the causes of coral reef degradation
and suggest ideas for successful conservation and management.

A SAFETY MINUTE
A New Monthly Feature by Brian Hufford
Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we
wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we
otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if
you’re a trained free diver). Following
good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our
diving experiences that much more enjoyable.
May 2005 Safety Minute
Tip:
Do you have a signaling sausage? Many divers don’t carry one
. . . but it’s a great thing to have when you’re drift diving on
the Ft Lauderdale reefs, the wind and sea get heavy as you come up, and you
REALLY want the boat captain to find you and your dive buddy.
Keep one in a BCD pocket or clipped to a D ring . . . you’ll
appreciate it the one time you really need it.

OCEANFEST SUCCESS
Very Nice Job, SFDI Volunteers !!
Photos by Debby
Bradford

South Florida Divers had another very successful exhibition at
Oceanfest
2005. This year we had the "Tattoo Application Station" which
was a huge
success.
Not only were we able to hold attendees attention while applying tattoos we
had people seeking out our booth to have the tattoos applied.
We spoke to many, many divers who expressed genuine interest in learning
more about our club and becoming members.
We want to express our sincere appreciation to all the SFDI members who
volunteered to work for Oceanfest and for the SFDI Booth
Special thanks to Joe Smariga for his dedicated assistance to Oceanfest
security he started well before opening and stayed well after closing each
night.
Special thanks also goes to Donna Eades for organizing the volunteers for
the Oceanfest seminar rooms and the VIP room as well as the SFDI booth and
for her own assistance manning the SFDI booth. Thanks for booth setup and
teardown to John Kansman and Fred Miller.
We appreciate all the members who volunteered. Julie Taylor, Fred Miller,
Wayne Panke, Adelle Nicholson, Butch Lee, Mike Rund, Jean Kossey, Jean
Ordonez, Tina Livanas, Debrah Kaddah, Debby Bradford, Bob Horin, Brian
Huffard, Bill Dietz, Eric Rhode, Barbara Sabatelli, Dave Wills, Sandra
Hofer, David Schneider, Elaine Schneider, Pat Lamicilli, Kim Huzinker, Pete
Stephinson, Chris Hinckley, Cheryl Teugels, Marc Cohen, Jon Black, Gerry
Cowen.
The winner oF the tank raffle was the Jason Barrett family from Tampa. They
came down for the show and were disapointed they were unable to dive due to
the weather. They were quite happy to go home with a new tank though.
