President's Message Who said there were no bugs left........
~ By Pete Stephinson
The last several weekends we've been fortunate to have great weather for diving. This last Saturday (Feb 16th) Dave and John each took their boats out with groups of club members and had a great time. The weather was sunny and the water temp was a balmy 75 degrees. I'm pleased to report that there are bugs a plenty out there - if you find the right spot. Dave must have the magic touch as he put a group of divers on what must have been a lobster convention. They were having a great time until their party was broken up by the keen SFDI hunters. You can see the photographic evidence elsewhere in this newsletter. Everybody went home with enough for a good lobster dinner. John and Gerry, used their surface interval to practice a new sport - "Dive Boat Ping Pong". A lobster net used to retrieve the ball is an essential piece of equipment in this emerging sport. Given their swashbuckling attire, John and Gerry will henceforth be known as the "The Ping Pong Pirates". We have a very full schedule in the months ahead. We have a number of dives on the calendar as well as other activities such as bike riding at Shark Valley to see the alligators and the annual Camping and Canoe weekend at Jonathan Dickenson State Park - always a lot of fun. I'm pleased to report that we are having a good rate of membership renewals so far but would remind those of you who haven't got round to it yet that now is a good time, and membership is required to participate in club activities. For just over a year we have been holding our monthly meetings at the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron. As I advised at a recent meeting, the Power Squadron have given up their lease so their premises will no longer be available to us. The March meeting will be the last we hold at the Power Squadron. We will be holding the April and subsequent meetings at the American Legion, 1620 West State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315. This facility is very close to where we currently meet and directions will be given at our March meeting. So what's holding you back ? the weather's great and the water's fine Hope to see you in it some time soon Pete email: President@SFDI.com |

Club Policies on Dives and Trips: Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone. If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones: 1. Payment for Dives, Events and trips: A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid. Payments for dives should be made when signing up. Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator. In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment. 2. Cancellation: Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time. Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event. 3. Certification Requirements: Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels. For example Advanced Open Water. In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator. In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive. In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar. No exceptions will be made for any reason. 4. Special Needs: Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water. However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance. It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

March Meeting Program
MORE BEEF ABOUT REEFS
On March 5th, marine biologist Meaghan Johnson will present the different components of the Florida Reef Resilience Program (frrp.org) sponsored by the Nature Conservancy (nature.org), a worldwide conservation organization that protects ecologically important lands and waters. Included in the presentation are the three year results (2005-2007) of the Coral Bleaching Response and Disease Surveys in South Florida (Martin County to the Dry Tortugas) and the results of the Staghorn Coral Restoration Project in the Florida Keys, as well as the results of a survey of recreational divers, snorkelers and fishermen regarding their perception and user satisfaction of the reef tract in the Florida Keys. Finally, Ms. Johnson will engage us in a discussion about the health of the reef and reef management. Join us to beef about reefs!

What's hundreds of miles across, hundreds of feet deep and resides in the North Pacific?
A Feature by Brian Hufford
Unfortunately, nothing good . . . it's the world largest trash “dump”. It's got old shoes, plastic bottles, wood. metal . . . anything that floats or stay suspended in the water column. It's mostly plastic and about 80% of it comes from land. It's runoff from every corner of the world. There are lots of good things about plastic, we couldn't live without it in todays world, but one of the not so good things about plastic is that once made, it never goes away. Most of the plastic in the ocean is small particles that stay suspended in the water column. Some fish feed on it, thinking it's plankton, and then over time, die of starvation because the stomach is full of plastic. The two biggest sources of plastic waste are shopping bags and plastic water bottles. Some states are putting a tax on shopping bags, trying to get retailers to switch to something else. The “green” movement recommends re-usable cloth bags for all shopping, including groceries. They also recommend not using or limiting the use of disposable water bottles. One of the local conservation groups, Ocean Watch, conducts beach, waterway, and reef clean-ups. This help keep some of the trash from getting into our oceans.
If you're interested in helping keep our oceans clean and reefs healthy, consider not using plastic shopping bags or water bottles, and volunteering on one of the Ocean Watch clean-ups.

LOBSTER LAW CHANGES
The Florida State FWC is about to adversely change the Lobster catch laws to
favor the Trap Fisherman and reduce the sport diver's opportunity to enjoy
their sport.
Last night Chris and I attended the Spiny Lobster Ad Hoc Advisory Board
meeting at the Fishing Hall of Fame
Many points were raised but the absolute consensus was the FWCC Ad Hoc
Lobster committee is under represented by recreational interests and as
such, the commercial harvesters (trappers) currently have free reign to
change the rules to ensuring themselves of a stable catch level taken from a
dwindling resource.
A few numbers to think about:
- less than 500 trappers make a living from trapping lobsters yet they take
70+% of the resource
- over 130,000 recreational lobster stamps were sold to FL residents last
year yet they only account for 20% of the catch
- commercial lobster divers account for 7% and bully netting accounts for
the remaining 2-3%
We feel the Spiny Lobster Advisory Board was stacked in favor of the
commercial trappers. The board is comprised of 4 commercial trappers, 3
wholesalers, 3 recreational fishers (divers) and 3 NGOs. No dive industry
representative was appointed.
The meetings were held State areas, which were not populated with sport
divers or dive industry businesses.
As Divers we are not against a shorter season for all parties. We are not
against a larger license fee FOR ALL PARTIES (slotted for enforcement). We
welcome any suggestions leading to a sustainable lobster fishery resource.
It is proposed to:
• Lengthen the season for Commercial Trappers.
• Require State issue catch tags for Sport Divers
• Reduce the limit for Sport Divers
• Put an end to mandatory trap reductions

America's Boating Course
Hey, we all spend a lot of time on boats. Why not take advantage of the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron's "America's Boating Course" (ABC) to improve your knowledge of boating skills and safe boating practices. The course is run monthly at no charge. Details can be found at http://www.usps.org/e_stuff/ABC.html. The course is held on the first Monday of every month from 7-9PM and concludes the following Saturday from 9 til 2PM.(lunch provided). Each person who completes the course receives an ABC text book, an informative CD and a certificate of completion which may help in reducing insurance rates for boat owners. If you are interested in signing up, or finding out more, email the Power Squadron at ABCCourse@aol.com including your name and contact information.

A SAFETY MINUTE
This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto
Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver). Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.
March 2008 Safety Minute
The day we nearly died!
This is not fiction, but a true, real life experience.
Tara & I had just arrived in St. Martin.
We rented a car, dumped our luggage at the hotel & took off exploring with our
snorkel gear on hand.
Tara wanted to visit some fancy hotel so off we went.
It was a beach side resort with a beautiful ocean front view.
In the distance, about 100 yards offshore was a rock outcrop.
I decided that it would be adventurous for us to snorkel there in order to
check-out the marine life.
We where about 2/3 of the way there when I got run-over by a speeding boat.
Pictures, evidence and a common sense safety minute at the next monthly meeting.
Joe G.
