President's Message

Time to get wet.......

~ By Pete Stephinson

I hope those of you who were at the February meeting enjoyed it as much as I did. It was great to have such a good turn out and the atmosphere was really up beat.  It was really a pleasure to meet Bill Gardner, one of the founders of the club, and have him tell us a little of the early days of the club. It was quite fitting that Cheryl Teugels brought along the "Custom Tank". Many of you may not have seen the tank before but it was decorated by the founding members, and Article XI of the club's bylaws specifically address it's care. Care of the tank is entrusted to the current Club President who has the responsibility to pass it on to his/her successor for safekeeping. The custom paint work and plating are in pristine condition and it truly is a work of art. Bill was able to share with us how it came to be created and how it was used by the founding members as a "ticket' to get them into shows. A photo of the tank is included in this newsletter. It serves as a good reminder that the club we belong to today has been in existence and remained strong for over 30 years, following the directions and traditions established by the founding members.

We were also very fortunate to have Barry Kulick as speaker.  Barry presented his year in pictures and they were as good as they usually are. I was particularly impressed by the way Barry is able to capture amazing images across the complete spectrum. From amazing close ups of the tiny creatures we find off the Florida coast to magnificent wide angle photos of the whales at Galapagos. Barry 's presentation is always one of the highlights of the year and we hope he will come present to us again next year.

For those of you who didn't come (and that's nearly all of you !!!), you missed out on some good dives yesterday (Feb 11th) out of Lantana. I was surprised to find that there were only three of us on the dive, myself and two of our new members. We had good weather and even though there was a good south westerly breeze the sea was comparatively calm. The water was a balmy 72 degrees. We saw a good selection of sea life -- a couple of turtles, a large nurse shark and a several green Morays. I also netted my first bug for 2006. So for those of you who who missed out, or have yet to get wet in 2006,  you can fix this problem during March. We have two club dives scheduled, one from Key Largo and one out of Port Everglades. We also have a number of other activities scheduled so check out the calendar and sign up for those that interest you.

As a club, we negotiate rates for dive charters that are usually less than you would pay if you were to go as an individual. We will continue to do that but expect the rates to be higher during 2006. This is because a significant portion of the cost of running a charter boat is fuel. Dive boats, like other businesses have had to raise their costs to cover the increased cost of fuel. We may be paying more, but it will still be more economical to dive with the club.

And while on the subject of economics, I'd like to ask all of you who haven't renewed yet for 2006 to do so. The annual membership fee, at $55 is very reasonable considering what you get for it. Membership is required to participate in Club dives or events other than the monthly meeting.  We increase the fee to $60  after the end February so You may want to act fast to save yourself the additional $5.00.

I won't be at the March meeting.  I'll be out in Colorado checking out the slopes. But for those of you in town, you won't want to miss out on hearing Dr Ivan Montoya present on the subject of Dive Medicine. As active divers, having a basic knowledge of some  of the problems which divers can experience, where to get help, and what facilities are available is extremely useful information to have. I'm sure that Dr Montoya's presentation will be both interesting and useful.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

  • KIM HUNZIKER'S TENNECO TOWER DIVE

    MARCH 19

Sunk in 1985 by the Tenneco Oil Company, the decommissioned oil platform was hauled from the Gulf of Mexico on a massive barge and deployed in three sections, each one a little deeper than the other, in a straight east-west line. Only two towers are in recreational depth at 70 -110'.  The plan is to do the one that bottoms at 105' and tops out at about 62'.  Most of the "good stuff" goes down to around 90'.  Advanced Certification required and you should have at least 20-30 dives, some at depth. Sign up sheet at March Meeting.

While Brian has resigned from the e-board, he has expressed his interest in continuing to run dives and activities from time to time - so we look forward to continuing to enjoy his company. Nominations for the vacant "member-at-large" e-board position will be opened at the March meeting and an election held in April. If any one is interested in this position, please have someone nominate you at the March or April meetings.

LEARN ABOUT DIVE MEDICINE

South Florida Divers offers an evening of Basic Dive Medicine presented by Dr. Ivan Montoya, an emergency, hyperbaric and dive medicine specialist at Mercy Hospital?s Hyperbaric and Problem Wound Center in Miami, where the DAN (Divers Alert Network) regional coordinators for Florida and the Caribbean are located.  Since opening in 1989, Mercy has treated more dive-related injuries than any other facility nationwide.  It operates two state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers that can simulate depths exceeding 165 ft of sea water pressure.

A native of Colombia, Dr. Montoya received degrees from the Universities of Chicago and Illinois, and did his residency at the University of Miami.  He served the North Broward Medical Center in Pompano and the Broward General Hospital in Fort. Lauderdale before joining the staff of Mercy Hospital in 1988.  He is a member of the Underwater and Hyperbaric Medical Society, and a fellow at the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine.

Join us on March 1st for this most important presentation ? reinforce what you already know about dive medicine, and learn something new!

Shark Valley Bike Ride February 2006

Lot's of teeth...no sharks.
What a glorious day for a bike ride. Perfect weather. An excellent group of friends from SFDI met at Shark Valley in the Florida Everglades for the 15 mile nature/bike ride. We enjoyed numerous alligator sightings. (some within feet/or inches depending on how daring you are) There was also a large variety of birds egrets, herons, wood storks, roseate spoonbills, anhingas. A great time was had by all. We look forward to even more SFDI members joining us on the next club ride.

CAMP AND CANOE WEEKEND

MARCH 24-26

Located just north of Tequesta off US 1, Jonathan Dickinson State Park encompasses 11,500 acres and offers a wide variety of activities, including camping, canoeing, kayaking, nature trail hiking,  biking and river tours.

We have secured three contiguous campsites for Friday and Saturday nights. This will allow us up to 24 people. If the response warrants we can probably rent more sites but they may not be adjoining the first three. Tenting only.. sorry, no camper units. Each site has an electric hook-up, water and fire ring. A Bathhouse with sanitary facilities and showers is very conveniently located.

The plan is to eat, drink and be merry. Amidst all that, we will be canoeing (or kayaking) along the Loxahatchee River to the former homestead of Trapper Nelson, the "Wildman of the Loxahatchee".

The campsite cost per person for both nights will run less than $15.00 (final cost will base on turn-out).  Canoes rental is $14.00 for the first two hours, $6.00 each additional hour.  Kayaks are slightly more.  Of course, you are welcome to bring your own.  Everyone will be responsible to bring their own camping gear as well as food and beverage.  A small convenience store is on premises with basics. Fire wood is generally available at the store but bringing a bundle with you is a wise idea (most Supermarkets have wood this time of year).

More details will be available at the February meeting or you can call Dave Wills or Dave Schneider.

A SAFETY MINUTE

A  Monthly Feature by Brian Hufford

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

 March 2006 Safety Minute

Boat Safety
Part 3

Small Craft Advice

We don’t always get to dive from ‘fully equipped’ dive boats; sometimes we get an opportunity to get our diving pleasure from a small ‘personal’ craft.  These boats usually don’t have a dive platform, so the challenge of getting in and out of the water is a bit more involved.  Getting into the water can be as simple as a back roll entry . . . just gear up, sit on the gunnel – edge of the boat – make sure no one’s in front of you [they’ll get smacked with your fins if they are] and roll backwards into the water.  Getting back on the boat can be a little trickier.  Its best if you and your dive buddy remove your BCD’s, but keep your fins and weight belt on.  If the boat has a ladder, remove your fins once you’re at the boat and board as outlined in parts one and two of the series. If the boat does NOT have a ladder, get a grip on the gunnel and with a pull of your arms and a kick with your fins, you should be able to ‘belly flop’ onto the boat. Hand both BCD’s to your buddy on the boat, and then proceed to board yourself.  Remember to inflate you BCD’s while doing this type procedure.

PORTUGUESE MAN OF WAR

by Marjory Meechan

Anyone out wandering the beaches in January will have noticed a fair number of Portuguese Man of War floundering around making pests of themselves. It may surprise you to know that not everyone knows what these are. I certainly didn't and neither did the barefoot German tourist striding purposefully along the beach at Spanish River park in Boca Raton. Fortunately, he did not step on one and seemed grateful for the heads-up on their identity.

My first inclination on sighting them was to wonder who had left all those strange little blue balloons all over the beach. After I worked out what they were, my second thought was to worry about how many more of them could be found bobbing around out in the sea and if this was going to be a problem for my future snorkeling/shore diving plans. I was comforted to learn that they usually spend their time bobbing around in the Sargasso Sea or in bunches of seaweed along the Gulf Stream and are only pushed into shore occasionally by strong inshore winds. More seasoned club members have assured me that they are not a big problem and are easily avoided when diving.

THE COOL CAMPAIGN

by Marjory Meechan

Everyone who attended the November meeting will remember George Cavros from the National Environmental Trust and the COOL (Conserve Our Ocean Legacy) Campaign. Following the meeting, George asked if we would be interested in expressing our support for the cause as a group. As a club, our focus is on getting together to go diving and have fun. So, while we are individually interested in a number of worthy causes and sometimes even construct activities around them (see the calendar for a fun bike trip in May that also has a worthy cause), we cannot endorse any organization or cause on behalf of all our membership. However, if you personally were impressed by George's presentation on the environmental damage caused by overfishing, please feel free to visit the links above and find out how you can support this cause.

And, speaking of worthy causes that can be fun, Earth day is coming up on April 22nd. If you're looking for an excuse to plan a fun meaningful event for the club, this could be it! Come to the e-board meeting and pitch your idea. We're always looking for new ways to have fun and be environmentally responsible.

South Florida Divers Club

  Frequently Asked Questions

By Brian Hufford

What kind of club is South Florida Divers?  We are a dive and social club.  We have diving and social events almost every week.  There’s more diving in the warmer months, but we have trips every month of the year.

What about social events?  We enjoy get togethers such as beach picnics, dinner on the town, bike rides, Holiday boat cruises, things like that.  We also have three parties each year: a pig roast in the spring, a seafood party in September and a holiday party in early December.  We usually have 80+ people in attendance; they’re always a great time.

Where do you dive?  Most of our diving is in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach area, where we do boats and shore diving.  We get down to the Keys several times each year, and we also do two or three out of country trips.  This past year we had trips to Turks and Caicos, Bimini, and Papua New Guinea.

What about club meetings?  We have a monthly meeting, the first Wednesday of the month, at the Ramada Inn on SR 84.  The meeting starts with a 30 minute social from 7:00 to 7:30 then the business section from 7:30 til 8:00, a short break, then the program or speaker.  We’ve had some very interesting speakers this past year, covering everything from the CSS Hunly to updates on important ocean environment issues.

How does the club organize all these events?  South Florida Divers is a volunteer organization, so it’s a club member that does each event.  Each event, social or diving, has a trip leader and a sign-up sheet.  We go over the calendar at each club meeting, plus, it’s in another section of this website. The sign-up sheet has the details about the trip, location, time, cost {if any}, trip leader.  We have a table set up with the sign-up sheets and a table for the treasury if funds are required.

What about membership?  Membership dues cover each calendar year and are $55 for individual and $65 for family.  There is a one time set-up fee of $5.  We ask that you be a member before participating in club events [other than the club meetings].

What do I need to do to join?  We have three requirements: You are a certified diver, you have and maintain diver insurance, and you pay your dues.   You can join at any club meeting, the membership table is just inside the door, or you can mail in the application.

What’s the best way to get involved in the club?  Become a member and join in the fun and events.  Members are always welcome to help with club work, lead a trip, organize a beach picnic, or participate on the board.

San Salvador, Bahamas

June 17th-24th, 2006

The SFDI group that just returned from the Turks & Caicos Islands had such a great time that a number of them decided to do a similar trip in 2006.  Check out the photos in this month's Newsletter and on the site to see what great diving they enjoyed, and the fun times which they had on land. On returning, Pete Stephinson, trip organizer checked out the prices and availability and secured an even better deal for 2006 at the Club Med Columbus Isle on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Scuba Diving "What San Sal offers divers is vertical walls, populated shallow reefs ideal for macro photography, groupers so friendly they will lay in your arms and the ever-present chance of spotting big creatures, such as Hammerhead Sharks and Manta Rays. San Sal was one of the very first destinations to develop wall diving and this is still the reason most divers visit. The south and western sides of the island are lined by one of the most impressive walls in The Bahamas, starting as shallow as 40 feet and dropping to thousands of feet. "

For more info visit http://www.about-the-bahamas.com/bahamas/sansalvador.cfm

The Club Med Columbus Isle offers similar facilities, dining, and range of activities to those we experienced at Turkoise. You can read about the resort on their web site at http://www.clubmed.com

The cost for the trip  includes:

       - Round trip airfare on Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale (includes taxes and transfers)
       - 7 day all inclusive package at Club Med Columbus Isle
             - all meals, drinks and gratuities
             - watersports and evening entertainment
             - 6 day diving package (reduced rates for non-divers) or those wanting a 3 day package)

We have over 20 people signed up. Don't miss out, if you want to sign up you are recommended to do so at the September Meeting. A $200 deposit is required to confirm your place. Payments will be accepted monthly with full payment due by April 2006.
