President's Message

Travel time......

~ By Pete Stephinson

It's that time of the year already.....time for summer trips. If you think the calendar looks a little light for June, there's a good reason for that. I'm taking a group to St Lucia for a week and Jeff Raffa is taking a group to Cozumel. May we have sunny weather and calm seas.

For those of you not travelling, the diving conditions should be good and the water warm. We are entering peak diving season. If you haven't done so already now's a good time to get your gear checked out for summer.

We were recently donated some used dive equipment to be sold/auctioned for charity. Our plan is to silent auction it at our July meeting and donate the proceeds to SUDS. If you have any used items you would like to include in the same silent auction, remember to bring them along to the July meeting and it'll help us raise more money for SUDS

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

The following equipment was donated:

A Sea Quest Pro QD+ BC, Size XL.  It has an integrated weight system.

A Scuba Pro regulator.  The 1st stage is a MK 25.  The second stage model is S600T or S600.  The Octopus is an R190.

The Console is Oceanic with a Compass, Depth gage to 200, Tank pressure gage to 5000 PSI and Temperature gage 0 to 100 F.

An  Aeris Atmos2 Nitrox Computer Wrist  Model.  The battery is low.  It will start but then shut down. Never been used.

2 alum 80s tanks (both need hydros)

The equipment will be available for inspection at the July meeting.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

June and beyond !

David Schneider, Vice President for Calendar

Once again we would like to thank all those members who have stepped up and organized our many various events. No matter how much we have going on we still need more members to come forward with new ideas and to act as Coordinators. Any E-Board member will be more than happy to give you any needed assistance to get you started. The more people we have planning events the better our Club will be.

To ensure privacy please note that we never post the phone numbers of our event coordinators. If you are a Club member please consult your Buddy List for the number you need. If you do not have one there will be a copy available at the next General Meeting, or contact Melissa Ames.

The Calendar is here for your convenience. If you see an event that interests you please contact the Coordinator directly. You can sign-up for an event at any time. Simply contact the Coordinator and he/she will be more than happy to add your name to the list and tell you where to mail payment. Remember, you are not on an event until payment has been received. "POLICIES AND PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE.

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website. I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them. I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:  A member is confirmed on an event only after their payment has been received.  Payments for dives must be made when signing-up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule provided by the Coordinator. In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive or other event he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation deadline. Cancellation deadlines are outlined in Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum qualifications, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums will be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive. No exceptions will be allowed.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive, trip or other event. These can be cases where someone needs extra help off or back on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic. It is the responsibility of the member to make sure that the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

If any of the above are not abundantly clear be sure to get clarification from an E-Board member.

June Meeting Program

EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OCEAN

BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK

How did the sea get salty? How far can you see across the ocean? Is the sea level rising? Does the moon affect ocean life? What’s the difference between a rip current and an undertow? What’s the most valuable shell in the world? How can you find the same sea location you’ve been in before without electronics?

At the general meeting on June 1st, you will have the opportunity to bring all of your ocean queries to geologist, oceanographer, ocean engineer, author of Diving Locations, Boynton/Dania, FL Atlantic University Professor Emeritus, International Legend of Diving, and self-proclaimed Diving Dinosaur Dr. Ray McAllister, who is sure to have an answer for you and diving wisdom for us all!

Check out Dr. McAllister’s website at: http://www.dinodiver.com/index.html

Benefits of Staying Calm Through Breath Control

Your ability to focus on breathing calmly as a diver is the key to ensuring you react to stress in a responsible way. Injuries during dives occur moreover as a result of are more panic than the actual events' cause.

Prevention is much better than cure when you are aware of what to concentrate on. Adopting certain techniques will allow for preventing unnecessary exertion and assist in remaining calm during the dive.

Maintaining peak performance buoyancy at all times is often a preventative mechanism. Lack of attending to this technique is one of the reasons many divers end up in a panic, resulting in disorientation and runaway ascents. It's important to keep equilibrium within the fundamentals of the diving process, thereby limiting and ruling out unnecessary factors such as hypoxia, the bends, altitude sickness etc.

Breathing continually full and deeply and exhaling in the same manner will overcome the air pressure expansion and compression within body cavities.

Never hold your breath and remember that you need to keep exhaling when that regulator is out of your mouth. Holding breath affects the equilibrium of the pressure exerted at that specific depth. The aforementioned should be conducted bearing in mind that your lungs are as much of a buoyancy control tool as your BC.

Ear Pressure Equalization

Many people experience severe ear pain, even when diving in a swimming pool, and automatically assume that they will have to deal with the same situation while scuba diving. This can easily be avoided if the techniques of ear pressure equalizing are correctly applied.

As one dives deeper, the water pressure increases and it is therefore extremely important for divers to equalize their ears to prevent serious damage, such as rupturing of the eardrum, while diving.

The ear consists of 4 basic structures. The outer ear, which is open and filled with air, experiences the same pressure as the outside environment. The middle ear is air-tight and air moves in and out through the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube links the ears to the nose and throat. If the Eustachian is open, the air flows from the nose and throat into the ears. Usually the air in the middle ear is trapped, as the Eustachian tubes are generally closed. The eardrum divides the outer and middle ear and consists of a thin tissue.

The pressure on the outer ear increases as a diver descends due to the fact that the outer ear is affected by the pressure of the surrounding environment. The pressure in the middle ear stays unchanged and this pressure difference between the outer and middle ear creates pressure on the eardrum. This is commonly referred to as “ear squeeze" and causes the eardrum to bulge away from the higher pressure, leading to the bursting of the eardrum with extreme pain, a ringing sound in the ears and sometimes even blood in the ear canal.

Ear pressure equalization during the descent of a dive is therefore vital and can be achieved by opening the Eustachian tube and allowing the higher pressure from the throat to enter the middle ear. Through this process, the pressure on the eardrum is equalized and leads to a "popping" sound.

There is no definite rule as to how often a diver should perform ear pressure equalization. It is however important, to equalize prior to any pain or discomfort, and it is generally recommended that equalizing should be done continually during the descent.

There are various techniques used for ear pressure equalization during descent. When using the "Valsalva Maneuver", the nostrils are pinched closed and the diver should blow softly through the nose. The "Frenzel Maneuver" is similar to the "Valsalva Maneuver" but one should swallow at the same time.

It is not generally necessary for divers to be concerned with ear pressure equalization when ascending but if the ears are not equalizing automatically the diver may experience discomfort when the eardrum moves outwards. This is known as "reverse block" or "reverse air squeeze" and can be accompanied by dizziness (alternobaric vertigo) which is caused by only one ear equalizing. To solve this problem, try using the "Toynbee Maneuver" which is used for ear pressure equalization on ascent. The diver should pinch the nose closed and swallow, sucking any air pressure out of the middle ear.

Scuba diving is not recommended for anyone suffering from any upper respiratory tract infections or severe nasal allergies, as the Eustachian tubes will become blocked by mucus and could inhibit successful ear pressure equalization. If one is subjected to rapid pressure changes when suffering from a sinus infection, the result is often extremely painful and can extend from the ears to the head and even the eyes, causing splitting headaches and severe ear pain, it can even lead to the ear drum bursting.
