President's Message

Home again......

~ By Pete Stephinson

Our week in Tobago was all too short. We had a great time. The diving was interesting. It was all drift diving and the currents were a lot less predictable than they are here in South Florida. Fortunately our dive guides were very familar with the dive sites and were able to keep us on track. The visibility was variable. Some days it was very good while on others the water demonstrated it's origins in the Orinoco river. We saw sea horses, frog fish, and lots more -- and also what is reputed to be the largest brain coral in the western hemisphere - awesome. We also enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the Manta Lodge and the village of Speyside. The locals were very friendly and local restaurants very good. You can see photos elsewhere in this newsletter.

As I mentioned in last month's newsletter, and covered at the May general meeting, this year we have been invited to participate at the the 4th annual "Blue Wild Expo" on June 4th,5th and 6th. This expo is brings together free divers, SCUBA divers, spear fisher people, marine artists and others interested in our ocean environment.   You can check out all the details at www.thebluewild.com. SFDI will be providing  support, helping the organizers with various tasks to help run the expo and we will also have a booth which we will use to promote SFDI. Proceeds for this expo will donated to Twin Palms Center (Boca Raton Society for the disabled). We had a great response with members volunteering to help out but still need a few more, particularly on the Sunday. You can sign up at our June meeting.

One thing that a number of you have requested for some time is an online forum where members can post messages, exchange ideas or solicit dive buddies for a pick up dive. We are currently in the process of establishing an SFDI message board on Scubaboard - www.scubaboard.com. There will be more details at the June meeting and information to follow so watch this space.

Now that we are back home and the summer weather is here I am planning to do lots of diving.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them.  I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:    A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:   Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

HYDROLAB - SATURATION DIVING FOR SCIENCE IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

In 1979 and 1981 Biologist Dr. Raymond Waldner served as an aquanaut on eight-day saturation dives in the Hydrolab undersea habitat, located in St. Croix, U.S.V.I. His presentation will focus on saturation diving, what living in an undersea habitat is like, and the work on fish/parasite interactions that his three fellow aquanauts and he performed.

ABOUT DR. RAYMOND WALDNER

Dr. Ray Waldner received his B.S. and M.S. at Florida Atlantic University , and his Ph.D. at the University of Puerto Rico . He is professor of biology at Palm Beach Atlantic University and adjunct professor of zoology at Florida Atlantic University .

He specializes in ichthyology and has authored over sixty professional and popular articles dealing with fishes and fishing, and is the Western Central Atlantic and Caribbean Regional expert for Sport Fishing magazine. He is a member of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean .

Dr. Waldner has led numerous educational trips to Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, and was the recipient of the 1994 Florida Professor of the Year Award, granted by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He has been the keynote speaker at a meeting of the Society of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine in Bonaire , and gives numerous presentations to local organizations each year.

Dr. Waldner has the distinction of having a fish parasite, Renocila waldneri, named in his honor, as well as having a children's science book, Wet and Wacky Water Fun, dedicated to him.

Get Smart With Joe G.

The ABC’s of diving glossary:

June, 2010 notes brought to you

by the letter : R (nothing with Q)

Rapid Ascent - The currently recognized recommended ascent rate is no faster than 60 feet / 18 meters per minute. A rapid ascent occurs when a diver ascends faster than the recommended rate. Rapid ascents are often uncontrolled and can be caused by overinflation, poor buoyancy control, being underweighted or panic.

Rapture Of The Deep - A common term for decompression sickness.

RBT - see Residual Bottom Time

Rebreather - is a type of breathing equipment that provides an oxygen-based breathing gas and recycles exhaled gases. This recycling reduces the volume of breathing gas used making a rebreather a lightweight and compact machine for supplying breathing gas for long durations in environments where humans cannot safely breathe from the atmosphere.

Recompression - A treatment for decompression sickness or air embolism where an individual is re-introduced to a controlled high pressure environment and gradually returned to normal pressure. Usually occurrs in a pressurized chamber, commonly known as a decompression chamber.

Redundancy - Or being Redundant is to prevent an entire system of failure by using duplicates. In Scuba diving this is why you have for example a double inflator, and a backup light while night diving.

Regulator - A device used to regulate the pressure inside a high pressure air cylinder and deliver gas to a diver at breathable ambient pressure (ambient pressure is the water pressure at depth i.e. 10m : 1 bar).

Repeat Dive / Repetitive Dive - More than one dive was made on the day of interest, with some period of time spent at the surface between dives (surface interval). "Single dive" and "repeat dive" are mutually exclusive.

Residual Nitrogen Time (RNT) - A theoretical mathematical representation of the amount of nitrogen absorbed in body tissues after a dive. Expressed on dive tables in minutes which are added to the no-decompression limit for a repetitive dive.

Respiration - The exchange of gases between a living organism and its environment; the act of breathing.

Respiratory Arrest - Cessation of breathing.

RIB - Rigid-hull inflatable boat.

RNT - see Residual Nitrogen Time

A SAFETY MINUTE

Joe G's June, 2010 Safety Minute

Remember what mom always told you?

Wash your hands before you eat!

Look both ways before you cross the street!

Don't run with scissors. Eat your vegetables.

Don't get in a car with a stranger!

Don't lean back in your chair.

Brush your teeth!!

Always wear your seatbelt.

All the rules our parents taught us when we were kids were to help keep us alive.

Everything we do in life has risks.

We learn from an early age that knowledge and prevention are musts in survival.

This certainly is true in diving as well.

Below is a list of Don'ts, or rules, for safely.

Don't dive alone.

Don't hold your breath.

Don't ascend faster than your smallest exhaled bubbles.

Don't stay down too long. Don't dive too deep.

Don't dive with malfunctioning equipment.

Don't destroy the environment.

Don't plan a decompression dive as a recreational

Don't go in overhead environments.

Don't dive beyond your training.

Don't forget your safety stop.
