President's Message

At last, time to travel.......

~ By Pete Stephinson

If you think the calendar for local dives in June is a little light - you'd be right. But that's not a problem - the reason is that so many of us are heading  overseas. We have a group going to Bequi Lagoon in Fiji, I'm taking a group to Saba, and we have others who will be in Antigua and the Bahamas. So there'll be no lack of our members diving in June - just not locally !! Once these trips are behind us,  expect to see a full schedule of local dives heading out into the summer. Already we have dives scheduled to Tenneco Towers and to Key Largo in July.

Also mark your calendars for our annual "Members Appreciation" beach party on July 25th - always a fun event. Just after that is Lobster mini-season -- something that lobsters look forward to with a similar level of enthusiasm to Turkeys just before Thanksgiving.

As I know you are all aware, our webmaster, Captain Chris has handed over the webmaster responsibilities due to health issues. Ray Schreiber has stepped in and this month's newsletter is his first. On behalf of all club members, I offer our thanks to Captain Chris for maintaining the site, and publishing the monthly Newsletter for the last several years. You have done a great job Chris and we have all appreciated your efforts, even if you left us each month pondering the answer to the age old question -- "where's  Kansman?". And by the way, if you think you've escaped, the webmaster position is still yours and we look forward to seeing you back in the saddle when you feel up to it. In the meantime,  thank you Ray for taking over this critical role -- we appreciate it.

Now I say this nearly every month, but we really do need to have some new faces help with organizing club dives and events. We do have a full calendar but it's a case of the same people doing all the work to make things happen. So come on guys and girls -- If you have enjoyed going on club dives and haven't helped set one up it's time to get off the stick and  start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive, why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES..

Club Policies for Dives and Trips

Dives, trips activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures which are available to anyone at any General Meeting.  If you do not have a copy you should certainly get one at the Membership Desk at the meeting.  Here is a summary of some of the important points.

1.  Payment:  A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

2.  Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

3.  Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

4.  Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

June Meeting Program

Lou_under_the_palms

YOU ARE WHAT YOU BREATHE

Mixed gas diving was developed to avoid nitrogen narcosis, improve decompression, decrease gas density,

lower thermal capacity, and prevent oxygen toxicity and high-pressure nervous syndrome.  There are basically

three mixtures of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium that are used today for deep and saturation diving: nitrox (nitrogen + oxygen),

heliox (helium + oxygen), and trimix (helium + nitrogen + oxygen).  Lou La Porta, Course Director, Master Instructor,

Instructor Trainer, and Tec and Trimix Instructor of Scubalou Diving, will share his knowledge about breathing gases

with SFDI on Wednesday, June 3rd.  Come and expand your scuba knowledge with Lou.

ABOUT LOU LA PORTA

Lou La Porta has pursued every aspect of diving education and is certified by DAN, DSAT, IANTD, PADI, PSAI and TDI.

Lou’s higher education was in music at the Chicago Conservatory College and the Vienna Academy of Music in Austria .

He taught at universities for eight years, then broke into the computer industry in it's heyday in 1978 and created a computer

software development company.  During his business career, Lou was active as a community leader and elected president

of the Skokie, Illinois Rotary.  He sold his company in 1999 to actively pursue a dive instructor career.

Lou worked at a dive shop in Skokie as a manager, sales person and instructor for 2½ years.  While there, Lou created

a very successful dive club, produced a tec program, started a direct mail campaign, enhanced sales, organized class schedules

and instruction staff, managed the computer network, standardized procedures, promoted travel, led trips and helped

maintain the facility.  He now lives in Pembroke Pines , and teaches all aspects of diving.

Lou says:  “My first diving experience was at the age of twelve.  Since then every dive has been a joy, filled with excitement.

I am a scuba omnivore; I will dive in any type of water be it warm ocean reef diving through ice diving.  I am able to dive caves

and deep wrecks.  Much of my diving has been in the Great Lakes and south Florida but I have traveled extensively seeking

out the best diving I can find.  I always want to demonstrate and instill my care and awe for the living environment and respect

for wrecks and their artifacts.  I wish to continue to teach, motivate and inspire students of all levels and always excel as a credit

to the dive community.”

Get Smart With Joe

A New Feature by Joe Gianodoto

The ABC’s of diving glossary:

Joe Giandinoto

June, 2009 notes brought to you

by the letter D

DCI or DCS
Decompression Illness or Decompression Sickness - "the bends"

Deco
Decompression. Usually refers to time at the end of the dive dedicated to off-gassing excess

inert gases such as nitrogen and helium. Can refer to any equipment used in decompression,

i.e., deco mix, deco tanks, deco time, deco tables, etc.

Decompression dive
Any dive where the diver is exposed to a higher pressure than when the dive began; the

decompression occurs as the diver ascends. Technically, every dive is a decompression

dive. But the term, "decompression dive", normally refers to a dive that requires "special"

time for decompression at the end of a dive.

Decompression schedule
A specific decompression procedure for a given dive profile, normally indicated as depth/minutes.

The schedule can be computer generated or obtained from Tables such as the US Navy

Decompression Tables.

DIN valve
An extremely reliable tank valve and regulator fitting which encloses the O-ring so it cannot "burst"

as commonly occurs with Yoke valves.

DPV
Diver Propulsion Vehicle. A battery powered underwater scooter that pulls divers through the water.

D-ring
A "D" shaped stainless steel ring located on the BC straps or scuba tank that is used to make

reliable connections with other equipment.

Doubles
Two tanks connected together in a backpack, usually identical "twin" tanks connected by a manifold

so the air supplies are common. Can be independent doubles, which have no manifold, and tanks

may not be identical.

Dry suit
A water-tight garment that keeps the diver's body warm by providing insulation with a layer of gas,

such as air. It is used for diving in waters that are too cold for comfortable wet suit protection, usually

below 65°F.

A SAFETY MINUTE

This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto

What should I do in a diving emergency?
If you or one of your dive buddies has an accident while diving, call the

Divers Alert Network (DAN) emergency telephone line (919-684-8111).

DAN is located at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Doctors,

emergency medical technicians and nurses are available 24 hours a day to

answer your questions. If needed, they will direct you to the nearest hyperbaric

chamber or other appropriate medical facility. If you would like to discuss a

potential diving-related health problem, contact the non-emergency Divers Alert

Network telephone line (800-446-2671).
