President's Message

Letter from St Lucia......

~ By Pete Stephinson

It’s our third day here in St Lucia and ‘we’re having a great time. We arrived here Saturday afternoon and seem to have been on the go ever since. Sunday was a non-diving day so a number of us rented cars to tour the island. We first went to Treetop Adventure Park at Dennery to ride the zip line. It was a blast and we all had a lot of fun. From Dennery we proceeded round the island through Vieux Fort and Soufriere back to our hotel at Marigot Bay. We stopped to enjoy views of the world famous Pitons and some other great views. Though the distances are quite short, driving time was longer than expected due to the twisty hilly roads…… and numerous potholes however it was a great day. Today (Monday 13th) we had our first day of diving. We did a reef and a wreck, very pleasant dives. We are looking forward to the rest of the week diving. I hope the Cozumel group has as a good a time as we are having.

Back home we have plenty going on. We have a Lionfish tournament coming up and our usual July “Member’s Appreciation” beach party. The Lionfish Tournament should be a lot of fun though for those of you participating be careful with those poisonous barbs on the tips of the fins.

We were recently donated some used dive equipment to be sold/auctioned for charity. Our plan is to silent auction it at our July meeting and donate the proceeds to SUDS. If you have any used items you would like to include in the same silent auction, remember to bring them along to the July meeting and it'll help us raise more money for SUDS

See you in the water sometime soon

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

July and beyond !

David Schneider, Vice President for Calendar

Once again we would like to thank all those members who have stepped up and organized our many various events. No matter how much we have going on we still need more members to come forward with new ideas and to act as Coordinators. Any E-Board member will be more than happy to give you any needed assistance to get you started. The more people we have planning events the better our Club will be.

To ensure privacy please note that we never post the phone numbers of our event coordinators. If you are a Club member please consult your Buddy List for the number you need. If you do not have one there will be a copy available at the next General Meeting, or contact Melissa Ames.

The Calendar is here for your convenience. If you see an event that interests you please contact the Coordinator directly. You can sign-up for an event at any time. Simply contact the Coordinator and he/she will be more than happy to add your name to the list and tell you where to mail payment. Remember, you are not on an event until payment has been received. For those events with a maximum number of openings the date payment was received will be the determining factor for who goes on the event. No exceptions, no whining.

"POLICIES AND PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE.

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website. I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them. I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:  A member is confirmed on an event only after their payment has been received.  Payments for dives must be made when signing-up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule provided by the Coordinator. In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive or other event he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation deadline. Cancellation deadlines are outlined in Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum qualifications, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums will be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive. No exceptions will be allowed.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive, trip or other event. These can be cases where someone needs extra help off or back on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic. It is the responsibility of the member to make sure that the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

If any of the above are not abundantly clear be sure to get clarification from an E-Board member.

July Meeting Program

THE TREASURES OF COCOS ISLAND AND THE GOLFO DE PAPAGAYO, COSTA RICA

Cocos Island lies in the heart of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape, an area stretching from the Galapagos Islands in the South, north to Coiba in Panama. This marine corridor is known for its biodiversity and rates as one of the most dynamic dive sites in the hemisphere. It has also been named a World Heritage site and enjoys the protection of the Costa Rican government due to its rich marine environment. Over the past 18 years, our July 6th speaker, Susan Galli, has made 17 trips to Cocos and 2 trips to Malpelo in Colombia, where she and her colleagues have had the opportunity to capture the diverse marine life on film. Much of the filming was done while diving with rebreathers.

Much of the same marine life found at Cocos Island can also be found closer to the Costa Rican mainland in the Papagayo Gulf on the Northwest coast of Costa Rica in the Province of Guanacaste that lies just south of Nicaragua. For those divers who may not have the chance to make the 300-mile crossing to Cocos, diving in the Papagayo Gulf area is an exciting alternative.

Come to the general meeting on July 6th and hear about these fantastic dive destinations from a diver who knows them well!

ABOUT SUSAN GALLI

Susan Galli is co-founder of Almaco Diving in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. An avid scuba diver with a particular fondness for Cocos Island, she has 17 Cocos trips under her belt. Susan has been an environmental advocate for marine conservation efforts in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape Project, which supports marine conservation and sustainable use of resources in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama. She has also worked with various non-governmental organizations such as Conservation International (CI) to raise awareness and assist with fund raising to protect the Seascape. Her video footage has been used in several CI video presentations and in video presentations for the former Fathoms magazine. Galli has been a speaker at the Boston Sea Rovers exposition in Boston and Beneath the Sea in Secaucus, New Jersey, as well as at Pan Aqua Diving in New York City.

Ascend Slowly

There are many scuba diving safety tips that help to make diving an easy and safe sport. But most important is to remain within the no-decompression limits and to ascend slowly on every dive. Do not swim directly to the surface from depth. Rather, on each and every dive you make, pause your ascent for a minute or two at 20 feet, and again at 10 feet to make preventative decompression stops. Making a habit of this procedures will enable you to grow up to be an old mossback diver like me! :-)

Joe G’s Safety minute for July 2011

Monitoring Air Supply

In order to exercise safety when scuba diving and to ascend slowly, you must have air in your tank. Monitoring your air supply and air consumption is critical frequently throughout your dive. By the time you are down to 1,000 p.s.i., you should be well aware to where your dive boat or the beach is. By 500 p.s.i. you should be in the process of making a slow, controlled ascent back to surface. Monitoring your air supply is absolutely critical to your well being. Watch your gauges constantly throughout your dive and never, never run out of air.
