President's Message
Longing for Langusta
~ By Jeff Guzowski
What a vacation!  Nineteen club members made their first trip to the Sunset Waters Beach Resort in Curacao.  This resort had the most friendly and accommodating staff to make our stay a great one.  Jim Hunter, the General Manager, took care of all our needs, from making arrangements for in town trips, to having a barbeque party on the beach with a DJ.  There was a lot of eating, drinking and dancing, and a couple of people closed the bar down way into the next morning, just ask Larry Z and Eric Rohde how much fun they had.

The diving was great.  The dive shop was brand new.  We had new tanks, compressors, and boat (with a 2nd boat on the way).  Did I mention that the Dive Shop owners were new too?  Mike and Michelle had just taken over the dive shop, and what a great job they did picking Wade, Kristen and Carlos (aka Rodeo) to run the shop, and the boat dives.  We got choices of any three boat dives every day, with an additional two night dives.  We were taken on some of the most beautiful reefs, such as Mushroom Forest Deep, Mike’s Reef, 1st Encounter, and Casa Boa.  I want to take this opportunity to thank the whole dive shop gang for doing a great job; we all had a great time.  Hey Rodeo, we’re still waiting for that banana fish!

Our whole group would like to thank everyone at Sunset Waters for a great vacation.

Don’t forget to look over the July calendar; there are a lot of dives this month, and most important lobster mini season!  Make sure you sign up for these dives, they go fast in the summer, and they must be paid in full at this meeting.
Since this is July, our guest speaker is going to be a member of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commision (formerly known as the Florida Marine Patrol).  I hear Capt. Mike will be back for this meeting.

I want to thank our June guest speaker, Jamie Vernacchio, from  Nova Southeastern University, for the Coral Nursery presentation.

Dive safe, and I hope you get your limit during lobster mini season.

Yearly Dues Amount Up For Vote in August
A motion was passed at the last E-Board meeting concerning the amount of yearly dues.   The motion was for single membership dues to be raised from $45 to $55  per year and for family membership dues to be raised from $60 to $70.  The amounts will be effective immediately for new members and effective January 2004 for renewals.  We will be voting on this issue at the August meeting.

July 9 meeting program:
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
and Mike Lamphear in civvies!

Join us July 9 for our annual visit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  Capt. Mike Lamphear, now enjoying retirement with wife Kar, can't stay away from us and will be on hand July 9 to make us envious of his new retirement lifestyle.  You know you don't want to miss this meeting!  Pete Kendrigan from Florida Near Shore will also be there, with his CDs on sale for a great club price (see next item).

SFDI meetings start at 7:30 at the Ramada Fort Lauderdale Airport.  If you are not a member, and you are reading this on the Internet, please join us because visitors are ALWAYS WELCOME!  Remember to bring your wallet or checkbook ... we have some great raffle prizes, and you'll be wanting more SFDI T-shirts or hats for your surface interval on hot, sunny days!

For those of us who have been missing the turn to get into the Ramada (yes, I'm guilty), Ski was kind enough to write explicit, detailed directions to our meeting place from the North, South, East and West.  You may view his driving directions here on our About Us page.

Special SFDI Sale:
Broward County "Near Shore" CD

Pete Kendrigan, creator of the new, extremely cool Broward County "Near Shore" CD reviewed last month (see review here) has offered to bring copies of the CD to the July 9 SFDI meeting.  If you visit his website, the CD is just $19.95 plus shipping for a total of $22.85.  Pete will be selling the CD at the meeting for a special SFDI Members price of just $18...and he will even donate $2 of that to Ocean Watch!

If you are a beach diver, you must get this CD...you will be able to see the best places to dive and how far out you need to swim.  If you have a boat, you must get this CD...you will find the GPS coordinates to be invaluable for locating great new dive spots.  Even if you don't beach dive or own a boat, you will find this tool to be very fascinating, and you will learn a lot about our offshore environment by exploring the charts.

Remember to bring some cash or your checkbook to the July 9 meeting!  As long as you're spending money, remember we have great new T-shirts and caps for sale, and new raffle prizes every month!

Book Review

The Search for
the Giant Squid

By Richard Ellis

~ Review by Marc Cohen
All of you know the giant squid is synonymous with deep-sea divers.  For example, who can forget the classic films, "Reap The Wild Wind", "The Road To Bali", and "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea"?  Well, here is a book I know you will enjoy.  This reviewer certainly did.

American marine artist and writer, Richard Ellis, has researched and studied all the mythology and known facts of Architeuthis, more commonly known as the giant squid;  and complied this information in a beautiful 322 page hard-cover book. Even in our own age of space and deep sea exploration, very little is known about this elusive sea creature,as none have ever been seen, or photographed in their natural environment.  Richard Ellis introduces us to this amazing sea animal with various chapters that include authenticated sightings and strandings; it's known biology, as well as the giant squids' inclusion in folklore, fictional literature, and movies.  There are also many photos of specimens that have washed up dead on shores and illustrations based on both imagination and fact.

I highly recommend this book for divers and anyone interested in marine life and the ocean, or anyone just interested in a true to life sea monster!  You will want to grab onto this book the way a squid would grab onto its prey!

Ordering Information: "The Search For The Giant Squid" by Richard Ellis; ISBN# 1-55-821-689-8; $35.00 & $3.95 shipping, major credit cards accepted. The Lyons Press, 123 West 18th Street, NYC, New York 10011  Phone: 1 800 836-0510.  Or check it out @your library!

Mile Markers:
Life's Significant Events

Congratulations to Maria Ferrer, daughter of Kit Ferrer.  Maria was invited by the Rome Institute to perform the role of Frasquita, one of the gypsies in Bizet's Opera Carmen.  She is one of the youngest performers ever chosen by the Rome Institute.  Maria recently performed at a benefit recital with Adelina, world-renowned Russian pianist.  All we can say is...wow!

You just never know WHAT Fred or Wayne
could encounter on a beach dive!

Apr. 15, 2003: The Three D, an 80-foot luxury yacht, ended up aground on the beach at John U. Lloyd State Park in Hollywood early Mondaym orning after the skipper fell asleep. Taking it easy and enjoying herself and all the excitement was Martha Maurer, of nearby Dania Beach, who walks the beach most mornings. (Sun-Sentinel/Lou Toman)
