Longing for Langusta ~ By Jeff Guzowski
What
a vacation! Nineteen club members made their first trip to the Sunset
Waters Beach Resort in Curacao. This resort had the most friendly
and accommodating staff to make our stay a great one. Jim Hunter,
the General Manager, took care of all our needs, from making arrangements
for in town trips, to having a barbeque party on the beach with a DJ.
There was a lot of eating, drinking and dancing, and a couple of people
closed the bar down way into the next morning, just ask Larry Z and Eric
Rohde how much fun they had.
The diving was great. The dive shop was brand new. We had new tanks, compressors, and boat (with a 2nd boat on the way). Did I mention that the Dive Shop owners were new too? Mike and Michelle had just taken over the dive shop, and what a great job they did picking Wade, Kristen and Carlos (aka Rodeo) to run the shop, and the boat dives. We got choices of any three boat dives every day, with an additional two night dives. We were taken on some of the most beautiful reefs, such as Mushroom Forest Deep, Mike’s Reef, 1st Encounter, and Casa Boa. I want to take this opportunity to thank the whole dive shop gang for doing a great job; we all had a great time. Hey Rodeo, we’re still waiting for that banana fish! Our whole group would like to thank everyone at Sunset Waters for a great vacation. Don’t forget to look over the
July calendar; there are a lot of dives this month, and most important
lobster mini season! Make sure you sign up for these dives, they
go fast in the summer, and they must be paid in full at this meeting.
I want to thank our June guest speaker, Jamie Vernacchio, from Nova Southeastern University, for the Coral Nursery presentation. Dive safe, and I hope you get your limit during lobster mini season. ~ Ski

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Mike Lamphear in civvies!
SFDI meetings start at 7:30 at the Ramada Fort Lauderdale Airport. If you are not a member, and you are reading this on the Internet, please join us because visitors are ALWAYS WELCOME! Remember to bring your wallet or checkbook ... we have some great raffle prizes, and you'll be wanting more SFDI T-shirts or hats for your surface interval on hot, sunny days! For those of us who have been missing the turn to get into the Ramada (yes, I'm guilty), Ski was kind enough to write explicit, detailed directions to our meeting place from the North, South, East and West. You may view his driving directions here on our About Us page. |

If you have a boat, you must get this CD...you will find the GPS coordinates to be invaluable for locating great new dive spots. Even if you don't beach dive or own a boat, you will find this tool to be very fascinating, and you will learn a lot about our offshore environment by exploring the charts. American marine artist and writer, Richard Ellis, has researched and studied all the mythology and known facts of Architeuthis, more commonly known as the giant squid; and complied this information in a beautiful 322 page hard-cover book. Even in our own age of space and deep sea exploration, very little is known about this elusive sea creature,as none have ever been seen, or photographed in their natural environment. Richard Ellis introduces us to this amazing sea animal with various chapters that include authenticated sightings and strandings; it's known biology, as well as the giant squids' inclusion in folklore, fictional literature, and movies. There are also many photos of specimens that have washed up dead on shores and illustrations based on both imagination and fact. I highly recommend this book for divers and anyone interested in marine life and the ocean, or anyone just interested in a true to life sea monster! You will want to grab onto this book the way a squid would grab onto its prey! Ordering Information: "The Search For The Giant Squid" by Richard Ellis; ISBN# 1-55-821-689-8; $35.00 & $3.95 shipping, major credit cards accepted. The Lyons Press, 123 West 18th Street, NYC, New York 10011 Phone: 1 800 836-0510. Or check it out @your library! |
Ocean.com: Everything Ocean
Anyone with an interest in the ocean will find Ocean.com an exciting site to explore. As visitors dive deeper into the main areas of the site, they will find information on everything from marine conservation to ocean sports and ocean travel. For classroom use, teachers and students will want to visit the Ocean Channel, Poseidon's Library and the Ocean Gallery. High quality streaming video of sea animals in their natural habitats, documentary films and public service announcements on conservation as well as multimedia presentations using Flash technology and wonderful photographs are available in the Ocean Channel. For report writing, students will find quick facts and images of ocean creatures or may send their questions to a marine scientist in the library's Creature Feature or Ask Poseidon sections. Selected photos from the gallery could be used to take students on a virtual tour of "the world beneath the waves". Professional and amateur filmmakers and photographers are given the opportunity to submit their work to the site for publication. Go grab a beverage and a snack and get comfortable in your chair, because you will want to spend hours exploring this magnificent website! |

Congratulations to Maria Ferrer, daughter of Kit Ferrer. Maria was invited by the Rome Institute to perform the role of Frasquita, one of the gypsies in Bizet's Opera Carmen. She is one of the youngest performers ever chosen by the Rome Institute. Maria recently performed at a benefit recital with Adelina, world-renowned Russian pianist. All we can say is...wow!

Apr. 15, 2003: The Three D, an 80-foot luxury yacht, ended up aground on the beach at John U. Lloyd State Park in Hollywood early Mondaym orning after the skipper fell asleep. Taking it easy and enjoying herself and all the excitement was Martha Maurer, of nearby Dania Beach, who walks the beach most mornings. (Sun-Sentinel/Lou Toman) |
