President's Message

Time to get wet.........

~ By Pete Stephinson

During June, two of our summer trips took place, the first to Cozumel and the second to Roatan. The feedback I received from those who participated was that they had a great time.  I'm looking forward taking the 3rd group to Dominica mid-July. I'm sure we'll have just as good a time as the first two groups.

Summer weather is upon us. The drought has ended and we are in to the usual summer pattern of thunder showers in the afternoons. Now that shouldn't stop any of us enjoying ourselves in the water -  so if you haven't got wet this summer yet.....  now's your chance. We have a full calendar of dives planned so get along to our July meeting and get signed up.

As well as dives we have a number of other events and activities planned such as our annual member's appreciation party on the beach at Fort Lauderdale on July 26th. That's always a fun event which I look forward to attending.

This month, we are moving to a new venue for our monthly General Meeting. We have been at the American Legion for the last several months but have found it a little crowded for the number of members we have attending. Faced with the choice of limiting attendance or changing venues we decided to move to the  Lauderdale Isles Yacht Club. For those of you who haven't attend one of our annual Pig Roasts or Sea Food Fests you can find the directions elsewhere in this newsletter. (that's a clue -- if you found your way to one of those events you can find your way to the July General Meeting)

For those of you keen Lobster hunters, It's time to get your lobstering gear readied for action.  Lobster season is just around the corner with mini-season being July 23rd and 24th this year. The lobsters are looking forward to it too.... with a similar enthusiasm to that of Turkeys looking forward to Thanksgiving.

Anyway -- enjoy you summer of diving. and whatever other activities you get involved with

And as usual, I hope to see you in the water some time soon

Pete

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES...

Club Policies on Dives and Trips:

Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone.  If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones:

1.      Payment for Dives, Events and trips:  A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid.  Payments for dives should be made when signing up.  Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator.  In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment.

2.      Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time.  Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event.

3.      Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels.  For example Advanced Open Water.  In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator.  In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive.  In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar.  No exceptions will be made for any reason.

4.      Special Needs:  Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water.  However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance.  It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

THE FREEDOM OF FREEDIVING

Have you ever felt weary of lugging around all that scuba equipment?  Thought about giving your tank and reg the old heave-ho?  Come to our SFDI meeting on July 2nd and hear all about freediving from record holding world champion freediver Martin Stepanek.  Founder of Freediving Instructors and Trainers, located right here in Fort Lauderdale, Martin will define freediving, separate truth from myth, discuss the latest advances in freediving made possible by advances in science and technology, explain how one trains to become a freediver, and share his own personal journey toward the sport.  Get ready to see some exciting video of world record dives!  Check out http://www.martinstepanek.com and http://www.divefit.com .

ABOUT MARTIN STEPANEK

Raised in the Czech Republic, Martin Stepanek trained as a finswimmer, freediver and SCUBA diver. He earned a degree in Forestry Engineering at the College of Forestry in Trutnov, and then studied Sports-Biology at Charles University in Prague. After immigrating to the United States, Martin acquired a degree and qualified as a Deep Sea Commercial Diver from the Divers Academy of the Eastern Seaboard. This afforded him extensive experience in mixed gas diving, hyperbaric chamber operations and saturation diving.

His passion for physiology and sports biology led him to further explore what the human body experiences while freediving. Martin found himself working closely with top researchers from prestigious universities like Harvard and the Karolynski Institutet of Sweden to uncover some of the physiological mysteries behind his sport. His participation in this ongoing research has helped scientists better understand the impact that depth and pressure have on freedivers.

Martin can hold his breath for over eight minutes and dive down to over 350 feet on a single breath of air. In the course of six years he has set ten Freediving World Records in several disciplines: Static Apnea, Constant Ballast, Variable Ballast, Free Immersion. In addition to competing, Martin is also a certified International Level B Freediving Judge for the International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA).

As a senior instructor for Performance Freediving International, he developed educational materials for clinics that he taught to over a thousand people worldwide. He is also an Instructor Trainer for the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD). He continues to train competitively and set world records in various disciplines. Martin is presently the Director of Training and Development of Freediving Instructors and Trainers (FIT), through which he hopes to educate and inspire people about his sport.

DIVING SMALL

A Feature by Brian Hufford

Gettin' tried of seeing the same old schools of grunts on every dive?  You know, the mixed schools of French, Blue Stripe, White, Tomtate, and Small Mouth grunts we see on every wreck and reef we dive on.  They're fun to see and it's good the reef system is healthy enough for them, but there's a whole 'nother world in the cracks and crevices, under the ledges, and sitting on the coral just waiting to be discovered.  It's the world the macro photographers love, the small stuff. We've all seen the Saddle Blenny, with the distinct dark saddles on it back.   Just in our diving area alone, there are over 100 species smaller than 3”.  Many of them live under the ledges, like the Cardinal fish, glassy sweepers,  and some of the gobies.  Some of the other gobies and blennies are just sitting out in the open, either on coral or the rubble next to it, using body color and marking as camouflage. They often let a diver get very close before scooting off to a nearby hiding place.  My favorites are the tube blennies; they live in old worm holes, with just their head protruding.  They're small, the head is about the size of a pencil eraser.  They'll dart out and grab a bite to eat or go fight with a neighbor that's gotten too close.

Here's some tips for enjoying these fish.  Go SLOOOOOW!!  Anyone that's been diving with me knows I go very slow.  There's lots to see going slow, and it doesn't spook the fish, even the small ones.  Make sure you can see up close.  We older folks often need vision correction, so if you need reading glasses to read (this), you'll need them in your mask too.  Guage reader inserts work great for. (Don't use the “stick on” kind, they don't stay in the mask very well.) Carry a small dive light for seeing back under the ledge or in a hole.  I also carry plastic magnifying glasses, so I can see the marking and tell some of the very small ones apart.

Next time you're on the second dive on a shallow reef, consider diving small to see all these fun little critters.  Bring all the stuff you'll need so you can enjoy the dive.

LOBSTER LAW CHANGES

by Stan Pierce

The Florida State FWC is about to adversely change the Lobster catch laws to favor the Trap Fisherman and reduce the sport diver's opportunity to enjoy their sport.

Chris and I attended the Spiny Lobster Ad Hoc Advisory Board meeting at the Fishing Hall of Fame

Many points were raised but the absolute consensus was the FWCC Ad Hoc Lobster committee is under represented by recreational interests and as such, the commercial harvesters (trappers) currently have free reign to change the rules to ensuring themselves of a stable catch level taken from a dwindling resource.

A few numbers to think about:
- less than 500 trappers make a living from trapping lobsters yet they take 70+% of the resource
- over 130,000 recreational lobster stamps were sold to FL residents last year yet they only account for 20% of the catch
- commercial lobster divers account for 7% and bully netting accounts for the remaining 2-3%

We feel the Spiny Lobster Advisory Board was stacked in favor of the commercial trappers. The board is comprised of 4 commercial trappers, 3 wholesalers, 3 recreational fishers (divers) and 3 NGOs. No dive industry representative was appointed.

The meetings were held State areas, which were not populated with sport divers or dive industry businesses.

As Divers we are not against a shorter season for all parties. We are not against a larger license fee FOR ALL PARTIES (slotted for enforcement). We welcome any suggestions leading to a sustainable lobster fishery resource.

It is proposed to:
•    Lengthen the season for Commercial Trappers.
•    Require State issue catch tags for Sport Divers
•    Reduce the limit for Sport Divers
•    Put an end to mandatory trap reductions

SAVE YOUR SPORT

A SAFETY MINUTE

This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

July 2008 Safety Minute

Diving Air Consumption Tips

Monitoring air supply is such an important factor to safe diving that you should practice to control and reduce your air consumption.

(1) Swim slowly and efficiently and don't waive your arms around or make rapid body movements.
<Advantage> We will appear friendlier & non-threatening to fauna.
(2) Rather than hyperventilating, be mindful of taking long slow inhalations and exhale equally long.
<Hint> Inhale, count to 4 then exhale
(3) Never hold your breath.
<Especially, when ascending>
(4) If you are still having trouble keeping up with the air-consumption of your dive buddies or the dive guide, make a point of swimming ten feet shallower than the others in your group because depth directly affects your air consumption.
<But remember to stay parallel or slightly behind your group>
(5) Relax, control your breathing and you will become a better diver.
<Only experience will teach you here, so dive as often as you can!>

South Florida Divers Club

  Frequently Asked Questions

By Brian Hufford

What kind of club is South Florida Divers?  We are a dive and social club.  We have diving and social events almost every week.  There’s more diving in the warmer months, but we have trips every month of the year.

What about social events?  We enjoy get togethers such as beach picnics, dinner on the town, bike rides, Holiday boat cruises, things like that.  We also have three parties each year: a pig roast in the spring, a seafood party in September and a holiday party in early December.  We usually have 80+ people in attendance; they’re always a great time.

Where do you dive?  Most of our diving is in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach area, where we do boats and shore diving.  We get down to the Keys several times each year, and we also do two or three out of country trips.  This past year we had trips to Turks and Caicos, Bimini, and Papua New Guinea.

What about club meetings?  We have a monthly meeting, the first Wednesday of the month, at the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron.  The meeting starts with a 30 minute social from 7:00 to 7:30 then the business section from 7:30 til 8:00, a short break, then the program or speaker.  We’ve had some very interesting speakers this past year, covering everything from the CSS Hunly to updates on important ocean environment issues.

How does the club organize all these events?  South Florida Divers is a volunteer organization, so it’s a club member that does each event.  Each event, social or diving, has a trip leader and a sign-up sheet.  We go over the calendar at each club meeting, plus, it’s in another section of this website. The sign-up sheet has the details about the trip, location, time, cost {if any}, trip leader.  We have a table set up with the sign-up sheets and a table for the treasury if funds are required.

What about membership?  Membership dues cover each calendar year and are $55 for individual and $65 for family.  There is a one time set-up fee of $5.  We ask that you be a member before participating in club events [other than the club meetings].

What do I need to do to join?  We have three requirements: You are a certified diver, you have and maintain diver insurance, and you pay your dues.   You can join at any club meeting, the membership table is just inside the door, or you can mail in the application.

What’s the best way to get involved in the club?  Become a member and join in the fun and events.  Members are always welcome to help with club work, lead a trip, organize a beach picnic, or participate on the board.
