President's Message 2007 starts with a splash........
~ By Pete Stephinson
Well I hope you enjoyed our last meeting , I certainly did and so did everyone who has commented to me. I was pleased to see that everyone successfully navigated their way to our new meeting place. While it is pleasing to see our tax dollars at work, hopefully the city will get those new pipes installed soon and the roads will be less challenging. Once there, everyone had a good time -- I only heard positive compliments about the Power Squadron facility and the service they provided -- thanks to Len and Sid. And as for the wacky gift exchange, it's the first I have been able to participate and thoroughly enjoyed it -- despite picking up something I will most likely save to bring back next year. Thanks to John Kansman for doing a great job in hosting this fun event. I know we have a few members who are thermally challenged and don't dive in January -- but you missed out yesterday (Jan 20th). Eight of us dove in search of the illusive Lemon Sharks. It was a beautiful day, sunny with a few clouds, gentle breeze and gentle swell. The water temp was a balmy 75 degrees with 40 feet visibility, and yes there were sightings of the illusive Lemons. We dove "Governor's Riverwalk" a line of wrecks off Palm Beach. For the second dive we drifted Breaker's reef where we encountered a large barnacle encrusted turtle and an octopus. It was a great start to what will be another great year of diving. As you can see in the calendar, we already have a number of events, both above and below the water planned for the first three months of the year. One I'm particularly looking forward to is the trip to dive with Manatees in early February. There will also be a camping trip in March and of course dives organized every month. It is great to see that some of these events are being organized by members who haven't done so before. Thank you. We always need members to step up and help as trip organizers. In the words of a very famous man, "Ask not what your club can do for you........but what you can do for your club.....". If you have an idea for a trip or activity you would like to organize, don't keep it a secret. Share it with Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eboard members. Or better still come along to the next eboard meeting and share it with all of us, you will be most welcome. Of course you can't participate in any of these events if you're not a member - and it's that time of year again. If you didn't renew at the January meeting there is still time to save $5 by renewing at the February meeting. We have held our membership fee at $55 (additional family members $15) for 2007 which is a great deal when you consider all the activities, events and dives which you get to attend. Activities are well underway for 2007, I know we're going to have another great year See you in the water some time soon Pete email: President@SFDI.com |

February Meeting Program
Barry Kulick is a professional underwater photographer and cameraman. A long time sport-diver, he sold his guitar making business in 1988, and turned his hobby into a career. During the past fourteen years he has had the opportunity to travel the world with his cameras to capture images of a wide variety of marine subjects; ranging in diversity from minute Pygmy Sea Horses, to enormous Great White Sharks, from the murky confines of ancient shipwrecks, to the vibrant color and ceaseless activity of majestic coral reefs. Although his major focus is the realm of still photography, Barry's cinema and video work has been seen in several films, commercials, training videos, and television shows. Hundreds of his still images have appeared throughout North, South and Central America, Europe, and Australia in books, magazines, advertisements, newspapers, postcards, puzzles, posters, computer software, art galleries, corporate and government publications, and private collections. Originally from New York City, Barry Kulick now lives in Miami, Florida with his wife Miriam, and their son Alexander.

America's Boating Course
Hey, we all spend a lot of time on boats. Why not take advantage of the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron's "America's Boating Course" (ABC) to improve your knowledge of boating skills and safe boating practices. The course is run monthly at no charge. Details can be found at http://www.usps.org/e_stuff/ABC.html. The course is held on the first Monday of every month from 7-9PM and concludes the following Saturday from 9 til 2PM.(lunch provided). Each person who completes the course receives an ABC text book, an informative CD and a certificate of completion which may help in reducing insurance rates for boat owners. The next course is scheduled for Monday Feb 5th and Saturday Feb 10th. If you are interested in signing up, or finding out more, email the Power Squadron at ABCCourse@aol.com including your name and contact information.
