President's Message

        ~ By Jeff Guzowski

Well 2004 has been a different year.  There were some pretty exciting things that happened during this year.  We had some great trips to Cozumel, Bahamas, and the Keys, not to mention a lot of dive charters during the year.  We also had our share of hurricanes to affect our diving.  We even had to reschedule our Seafood Fest twice because of 2 hurricane threats.  Speaking of Seafood Fest, if you didn’t get a chance to make it, you missed a great party.  We had at least 70 people who braved the weather despite the earlier rains.  All the food, including the covered dishes and the chicken was superb.  Thanks goes to all the people who pitched in to get this party going and the people who helped to clean up afterwards.

Speaking of party’s, we have the Holiday Party right around the corner so mark your calendars for Saturday, December 11th.  This is the one of the best party’s we throw during the year, where the ladies like to dress up and everybody dances all night long.  The location is at the IT Parker hall in Dania Beach and we will have maps for the location at the club meeting if you have never been there before.  The club will provide 3 turkeys, 2 honey baked hams, beer, wine, mixed drinks, and a DJ for dancing.  All you need to bring is a covered dish, $10, and your appetite.

We have one more exciting event before the end of the year, and that is our Annual Holiday Festive Lights Cruise. We started this last year and it was a big hit.  It will be on Sunday night, December 19th from 7PM to 10 PM.  This is a 3 hour cruise to see the holiday lights on the waters of Ft. Lauderdale.  See information in the newsletter.

As you know, I am stepping down from being on the EBoard for the club next year.  I have been on the EBoard for the last 24 years, the last 5 of which I had the great pleasure of being president.  I would like to take this time to thank everybody that was on the EBoard during that time.  Your help and support was overwhelming and the backbone of what made  this club successful.  I would also like to thank all the people that were not on EBoard, but came to the EBoard meetings, ran trips, charters, and presented some fresh new ideas, your hard work was truly appreciated too.

Holiday Cruise Information

This is the second annual Holiday Cruise that the club is running again.  We tried this last year and it was such a success that we will try to make this an annual event from now on.  The cruise is on Sunday, December 19.  We chose that date because last year there were not many houses lit up, since it was before the Winterfest Parade, and not many people had their lights on before the judging.  This year we should see Ft. Lauderdale waterways looking festive.  The American Dream II, is the charter that we will be taking, located at Pier 66, Slip 99.  It costs $25, and you need to bring your own drinks and an appetizer to share.  There will be a signup sheet for this at the club meeting and you must pay for it that night in order for us to hold your spot.  If you do not make the meeting, you can call me, and I will make arrangements for you to send a check to hold your spot.

HOLIDAY PARTY 2004

Our Holiday party is on Saturday, December 11, at the I.T. Parker Center in Dania Beach (click here for map and interactive directions).  The party starts at 7 PM and ends at 1 AM.  For those of you who have never been to this party, it is the best of the year.  The club provides a buffet style dinner, where we  provide 3 turkeys, 2 spiral hams, and all the beverages, which include a full bar with mixers, beer, wine, sodas, water, and the frozen drink of the night, made by John Kansman and his magical blender.  We have a new special DJ for dancing, and a  raffle with a lot of door prizes.  All you have to do is dress up, wear your dancing shoes, and bring $10, a covered dish, and your appetite.  A toy for tot is optional.  If you are at a loss for what to bring for a covered dish, you can see  Gerry Cohen at the sign up table; he has a covered dish sign up list with a lot of suggestions.  If you would like to help set up, we are starting at 6 PM.

January 5 meeting program:
Wacky Re-Gift Exchange IV:
Revenge of the Candelabra

On January 5 we will have our forth annual "Wacky Re-Gift Exchange" at the general meeting.  We are sure you got a Hanukah or Christmas or or Kwanzaa or holiday or birthday gift that made you say "thanks, but you really shouldn't have."  Wrap it up and bring it to the January 5 meeting and see if you can get something better!

Here's how it works.  Bring along an unused, unwanted gift...look around, you know you have at least one somewhere...and wrap it real purty-like.  Everyone who brings a gift gets a raffle ticket.

We will draw the tickets in "Chinese Auction" style.  The first person whose ticket is pulled gets the pick of the unopened gifts, and must open it in front of everyone.  The second person whose ticket is pulled can take the first person's gift away from them, or choose another unopened gift.  If they take the gift from the first person, the first person gets to go back and pick and open another gift.  The third person whose ticket is pulled can pick a third unopened gift, or take a gift away from the first or second person, and so forth.

Yes, it takes awhile to go through all the gifts and you will not want to miss the fun.  This is the most hilarious event of the year.  Actually, the majority of the gifts are nice items, just unwanted by the original recipient.  Surprisingly, at the end of the evening, nearly every unwanted gift goes home with someone who actually wants it.  See you January 5, gift in hand!  You are not required to participate, but if you don't, you'll probably regret it!
