President's Message

Lobsters Lobsters Lobsters......

~ By Pete Stephinson

Lobsters, Lobsters Lobsters.... thats's what's on our mind at this time of the year. I trust everyone gets (or got) a good haul this mini-season and continues to catch lots more during the regular season which opens August 6th.

I trust you've been getting in lots of dives this summer. I know I have and have been enjoying them. The conditions have been good though I did notice a steep thermocline one recent weekend. I was diving the Castor and encountered cooler water at about 50 feet. At a 100 feet it was a balmy 68 degrees. It just goes to show you can't always predict the conditions from what you see on top.

Check out this week's calendar and you'll see we have lots on. I know many of you are keenly looking forward to the annual Keys weekend and we also have several local dives. If you're looking for a diving getaway in September then I strongly recommend you join Dave Schneider for a week on Grand Bahama. The diving is great and the price can't be beat.

Our speaker at the August General Meeting is  Samantha Whitcraft, Director of Conservation Biology and Research for Oceanic Defense, an international non-profit organization that promotes awareness and preservation of "healthy aquatic ecosystems free from human abuse and neglect." Samantha will speak on the Gulf oil spill and its impact on South Florida - an extremely topical subject given all that has gone on recently.

I am planning to do lots more diving this summer.

See you in the water some time soon,

Pete

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them.  I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:    A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:   Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

From the E-Mail Box
Hi fellow SFDI members!

For those of you who have lost your original e-mail about how to get onto the South Florida Divers forum on ScubaBoard, I'm sending them again for your convenience.  We are having a great time with this forum that ScubaBoard gave to us for free.  So far we've scheduled a few dives...Blue Heron Bridge and a private boat dive come to mind.  We've posted post-trip pictures from the club's Sea Experience dive, and posted meeting reminders.

It is SOOOO easy!  First, you need to sign up for a FREE ScubaBoard account.  Just go to http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/register.php and sign up.  You can use any fun name you wish as long as it hasn't already been taken.  Sorry, you can't have DebbyDiver, it's mine. :)

Once you are a member, simply click here to read how to get onto our very own private South Florida Divers forum!  http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/south-florida-divers-inc/337065-sfdi-members-how-access-private-forum.html  When you apply to the group, please write "I am a paid club member and my name is " and tell us your real first and last name so we can check you off on the buddy list.

We have two places on ScubaBoard, the public area and the private area.  So far, the members have just been using the public area and you can get to that without opting in to the group.  However, the private area can ONLY be seen by our club members so if you have something to post that you don't want the other 145,000 ScubaBoard members to see, post it there.

Once logged in, wander around and get to know the place.  I spend most of my time in the Florida Conch area, and I frequently go on impromptu beach dives with other ScubaBoardians.

If you have ANY difficulties please contact me directly at debby.bradford@yahoo.com, or send me a PM on ScubaBoard.  I'm here to help.

Look for an article in the August SFDI newsletter about how to "subscribe" to the forum after you sign up for it, so that you can get e-mail notification of new posts.  This is not automatic, you need to opt in to it.  It's easy to figure out on your own, though, so if you want to do that, you don't need to wait for the newsletter.

Any questions?  Please contact me.  And do log in frequently and join us for impromptu beach dives, private boat dives, etc.  Join in the fun!

SEA you soon,
Debby Bradford aka DebbyDiver

GLIDING BETWEEN THE STALAGTITES AND STALAGMITES

Does the sentence "The Good Divers Are Living" mean anything more to you than the obvious? Take the first letter of each word and think of a cave diving rule. Don’t know the rules? Come to SFDI on August 4th and learn them! A hint - T stands for Training, G stands for Guide Line, and …… come and find out the rest. Expert cave diver Tim Owens will highlight the extreme sport of cave diving - motivations, safety, equipment, training, and adventure.

ABOUT TIM OWENS

Tim was first exposed to diving via the typical "discover-scuba" trip during a family vacation to Hawaii in 2003 and certified shortly thereafter. Living in Chicago at that time, most of his initial diving was confined to the Midwest quarries and Great Lakes shipwrecks, with the occasional Caribbean vacation trip thrown in. First exposed to cavern diving during a trip to Cozumel, Tim "caught the bug," and, in 2004, he relocated to South Florida where he progressed into more technical diving and took up cave diving. Today, Tim breathes with a rebreather and makes 200 dives a year - in caves up north to the reefs and wrecks from West Palm Beach to the Keys.

A SAFETY MINUTE

Joe G's August, 2010 Safety Minute

What to do when A Diver is Missing

Follow the outline below to find a missing diver.

(
1) Immediately
determine where the diver was last seen from the buddy and/or others.

(2)
Assign spotters to watch the last known location of the victim.

(3) Send out
Snorkelers to the area the diver was last seen.

(4) Assign a team of divers to
define the search area and begin the initial search.

(5)
Determine if the diver left the area without notifying anyone.

(6) Prepare another team, or more, of divers with proper equipment to
conduct a more systematic and complete search

By law, in the United States the first thing to do when a diver is missing is to notify the US coast guard or other police department services while you start your evaluations on who what when or where and how to do it. Dive boats must call the USCG the minute they know there a problem of any kind, missing, injury etc or the captain can lose his or her license.
